Cosina announced today that it will release the Voigtländer brand’s new Sony E-mount product, the APO-LANTHAR 28mm F2 Aspherical E-mount, in December 2025.

Features
This wide-angle lens from the APO-LANTHAR series pursues ultimate performance by adopting an apochromatic design that minimizes axial chromatic aberration of the three primary colors of light, RGB. It combines the performance of the widest wide-angle lens in Voigtländer’s history with compactness and ease of handling.

Main Features

Sony E-mount compatible
Equipped with electronic contacts, the lens usage status is reflected in the Exif information of the shooting data. It also has a built-in distance encoder, which supports 5-axis image stabilization on the camera body. It also allows you to zoom in on the viewfinder by operating the focus ring.

Optimized Optical Design
In addition to ensuring a full-size image circle, the optical design is optimized for Sony E-mount sensors, maintaining high resolution all the way to the edges of the screen and suppressing phenomena such as color cast.

Apochromatic design
To accommodate today’s high-pixel digital sensors, axial chromatic aberration and lateral chromatic aberration have been thoroughly suppressed.

Manual focus for precise focusing
The all-metal helicoid unit is machined and adjusted with high precision, and the use of high-quality grease that generates just the right amount of torque ensures smooth focusing, allowing for subtle focus adjustments.

Aperture click switching mechanism
The lens is equipped with an aperture click switching mechanism that allows the aperture ring to be opened and closed continuously without making a clicking sound, eliminating the need to worry about the sound of the aperture ring being picked up when recording video.

*APO-LANTHAR is a designation given to Voigtländer lenses with particularly high performance. The legendary APO-LANTHAR lens, which has captivated photographers with its outstanding imaging performance and beautiful depictions thanks to its apochromatic design, was born in 1951. Sony Q2 FY2025 Consolidated Financial Results

Entertainment, Technology & Service Segment take aways.

  • FY25 Q2 sales decreased 7% year-on-year, primarily due to a decrease in unit sales of TVs.
  • Operating income decreased 13% year-on-year primarily due to the impact of the decrease in sales, partially offset by reductions in operating expenses.
  • We have slightly increased our full-year forecast for sales from the previous forecast to 2 trillion 300 billion yen, and we have decreased our operating income forecast 11% to 160 billion yen, reflecting a 20 billion yen impact from tariffs from this quarter.

Imaging & Sensing Solutions Segment Take Aways.

  • Sales for the quarter increased 15% year-on-year and operating income increased 50%, both reaching record quarterly highs for the segment. This was primarily due to higher unit prices resulting from larger-sized sensors for mobile devices and increased sales volume of sensors for consumer cameras.
  • We upwardly revised our full-year forecast for sales 2% to 1 trillion 990 billion yen and operating income 11% to 310 billion yen, primarily due to the impact of foreign exchange rates.
  • Based on the trends in the final product market and the demand forecasts from our customers to date, we have decided not to include any impact from tariffs in the forecast for this segment.

The Viltrox AF 50mm f/1.4 FE Pro is an impressive lens in many ways, but it’s not flawless. In terms of sharpness, it is up there with the best, though. Image distortions and lateral CAs are low. The vignetting is about typical for such a lens. The quality of the bokeh is generally good with a few caveats. Not ideal are axial CAs at large apertures as well as the observed focus shift at close focus distances.
