New Lensbaby Spark 2.0 With Sweet 50 Optic

Lensbaby announced its new Lensbaby Spark 2.0 With Sweet 50 Optic today and you can preorder on B&H Photo

Reminiscent of the very first Lensbaby lens, the Spark 2.0 is a flexible lens body designed for use with Sony E-mount cameras and to be used in conjunction with the Optic Swap System. This Spark 2.0 is delivered with the Sweet 50 optic, which provides a clear sweet spot of sharp focus that is surrounded by a smooth blur, which can be adjusted depending on how the lens body is positioned. The Spark 2.0’s accordion-like design permits nearly unrestricted tilt range, up to 30° in any direction, and requires the distinct squeeze-to-focus movement to manually adjust focus. The Spark 2.0 and Sweet 50 combination also avails an f/2.5-22 adjustable aperture range, 12-blade diaphragm, and a minimum focusing distance of 1.1′ for working with close-up subjects.

Spark 2.0

  •  Sony E lens mount.
  •  Flexible, accordion-like body design resembles the Original Lensbaby from 2004 and enables tilting the optic up to ~30° in any direction.
  •  Unique squeeze-to-focus, squeeze-to-tilt design requires a fun “dance-like” process of achieving sharp, selective focus with creative distortions and blur.
  •  Accepts various optics from the Optic Swap System.
  •  Permits focusing as close as 1.1′ away.
  •  Metal lens mount for improved durability and rigidity.

Sweet 50 Optic

  •  Normal 50mm focal length provides a comfortable and natural field of view.
  •  Unique rendering delivers a precise sweet spot of focus surrounding by a characteristic blur. The quality, sharpness, and size of the in-focus area can be controlled by adjusting the lens body.
  •  Besides adjusting exposure, the f/2.5 to f/22 aperture range can also be used to adjust the size of the sweet spot of focus.
  •  A 12-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth, pleasing bokeh quality.
  •  Doublet lens construction uses two elements in one group, and both elements have a broadband, anti-reflective multi-coating to resist flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color accuracy.

DPR: Sony a7C Earns Silver Award

The Sony a7C is an interesting camera from sony that represents Sony’s first rangefinder-style body. It isn’t perfect, but it represents something new from Sony and you can read the full review from DPReview here or see the summaries above and below:

From a performance perspective, the a7C is essentially an a7 III with better autofocus, which is enough to keep it competitive, but not much more than that. But the key appeal of the a7C is its size, and how little it’s had to give up to achieve it.

What we likeWhat we don’t
  • Excellent image quality
  • Impressive and easy-to-use AF system
  • Class-leading battery life
  • Solid video set for most photographers
  • Collapsible kit zoom keeps the overall package small
  • USB charging adds convenience
  • Includes 5-axis stabilization, despite compact size
  • Hasn’t sacrificed the sense of build quality in its downsizing
  • All three dials controlled with your thumb
  • Viewfinder is very small with no real eye-cup
  • Menus are unavailable while the camera writes to a card
  • Menus are complex and less easy to navigate than Sony’s newer cameras
  • Kit zoom reach and aperture ranges aren’t especially ambitious
  • Video AF requires settings changes to activate tracking
  • Most settings persist across stills and video, making it necessary to change multiple settings when switching
  • No full mechanical shutter, risking distortion of movement (e-shutter) or bokeh at high shutter speeds (standard mode).
  • Raw files are either huge or have destructive compression applied
  • Many of Sony’s better lenses under-cut the benefit of a small body
  • Some rivals offer more flexible 10-bit video for more demanding projects

New DJI Ronin RS 2 Can Balance a7C With Sony 200-600mm

https://twitter.com/i/status/1320327170569490433

Philip Bloom “accomplished” something that seems like it should be impossible. He was able to balance the Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3mm G OSS with an a7C on the new DJI Ronin RS2. DJI’s new gimbal certainly is impressively powerful and it has some uniquely useful features.

Zeiss ZX1 Will Be Official Announced on October 29th at 6:00 AM

B&H Photo listed the Zeiss ZX1 early for preorder a few weeks ago and it is no longer available so hopefully some of you got your orders in. Now Nokishita is reporting that the official announcement will be October 29th around 6:00 AM EST.

It seems that the official announcement of the price etc. of ZEISS ZX1 will be on October 29 (around 19:00 Japan time?). As of October 29, the sales countries are the United States and Germany, and the price is 6000 dollars / 6000 euros.

The Zeiss ZX1 is certainly an interesting camera and I can’t wait to try one out, because I particularly enjoy the form factor of this camera.
