Sony Alpha 1 Added to DPReview Studio Scene

DPR added the Sony A1 to its studio comparison tool today. The results look pretty good but that is more color noise than I was hoping to see. The Nikon Z7II seems to keep up quite well and so does the Canon R5. You can see for yourself here.

Voigtlander APO-LANTHAR 35mm f/2 Aspherical Announced

Voigtlander APO-LANTHAR 35mm f/2 ASPH (coming soon):
B&H Photo / Amazon

Adopted an apochromat design that makes the on-axis chromatic aberration of RGB, which constitutes the three primary colors of light, as close to zero as possible. A semi-wide-angle lens that doubles as the APO-LANTHAR 50mm F2, a standard lens that pursues ultimate performance. It combines the performance of the best quasi-wide-angle lens in Voigtlander history with the compactness and ease of handling.

Main features:
● Compatible with Sony E mount. Equipped with electronic contacts, the Exif information of shooting data reflects the usage status of the lens. In addition, since it has a built-in distance encoder, it supports 5-axis camera shake correction on the camera body side. It is also possible to enlarge the viewfinder by operating the focus ring.

● Optimized optical design A full-size image circle is secured and an optical design optimized for the Sony E-mount sensor is adopted. High resolution is maintained up to the periphery of the screen, and phenomena such as color cast are suppressed.

● apochromatic design to correspond to digital sensors with high pixel current, and thoroughly suppress longitudinal chromatic aberration and lateral chromatic aberration.

● ball blur 12 sheets squeezed to enjoy the representation aperture blades not only F2 open F2.8, F5.6, adopted a special shape to be circular even F16. It is possible to draw using “ball blur” such as a point light source.

● Manual focus that enables reliable focusing. By adopting an all-metal helicoid unit that has been processed and adjusted with high precision and high-quality grease that produces appropriate torque, focusing with a smooth operation feeling is realized. Allows for delicate focus adjustment.

● Aperture click switching mechanism
Equipped with an aperture click switching mechanism that can open and close the aperture ring steplessly without generating a click sound. There is no need to worry about picking up the aperture ring operation sound when recording a video.

* APO-LANTHAR is the title given to high-performance products among Voigtlander lenses. APO-LANTHAR, a legendary lens that has fascinated photographers with its outstanding imaging performance and beautiful depiction designed by Apochromat, was born in 1951. Its origin dates back about 120 years.

DPRTV: Sony a7 vs Fujifilm X-T4

DPRTV seeks to answer the ultimate question Sony or Fujifilm. Many photographers that are fans of mirrorless cameras have bounced back and forth between Sony and Fujifilm over the years after leaving Canon or Nikon. Below is a summary of DPRTV’s interpretation of the choice.

  • Usually, we compare full-frame to full-frame, but can you get more useful features for your money by getting a smaller sensor camera
  • The a7III was picked since it has more controls than the a7C and it compares better to the XT4
  • Similar price between X-T4 and a7III
  • The X-T4 has beautiful control dials and you can use it in a classic way
  • The a7 is a small body and they aren’t crazy about the feel of the body
  • Both grips are kind of questionable
  • X-T4 has more robust weather sealing
  • X-T4 has a superior display that fully articulates and EVF to the a7III, but they won’t get in your way on the a7III
  • Fujifilm has improved its autofocus, but the a7III has better subject selection
  • Sony a7C has Real-Time AF that wipes the floor with the X-T4, but it’s not on the a7III
  • Tracking AF on the X-T4 is better than the a7III but the a7III has better face/eye-tracking
  • Sony has better high ISO and shadow information, but the X-T4 has a resolution advantage and the X-T4 has one of the best APS-C sensors on the market
  • Fujifilm has superior JPEG quality thanks to its film simulations
  • Sony a7III has a slight advantage if you’re processing RAW files
  • The Fujifilm X-T4 has a much faster readout speed and it gives you less rolling shutter and makes electronic shutter more useful
  • Both cameras have similar mechanical shutters, but the X-T4 can shoot at up to 30fps with crop
  • Fujifilm X-T4 destroys the Sony a7III for video quality
  • X-T4 doesn’t have a headphone jack without an adapter, but it does have a tally lamp that the a7III does not
  • The Sony a7III is known to overheat, but the X-T4 only overheats at 4k60p
  • Sony video autofocus is superior to Fujifilms
  • Fujifilm is the better overall video package
  • Sony has a larger lens selection thanks to third party glass, but Fujifilm has the most extensive lineup of APS-C and the prices are good so there isn’t incentive to compete with them
  • You can pay less to get similar bokeh on a full-frame sensor so Sony has a bokeh advantage
  • Fujifilm X-T4 is a much better-looking camera with a better shooting experience
  • No one looks at an a7III and says many I want to own one of those
  • The Sony Z battery is fantastic and the new Fujifilm NP-W235 battery is great too
  • Fujifilm X-T4 has superior IBIS to the Sony a7III, but a7III has fewer bugs during the video in select situations
  • Fujifilm X-T4 wins most categories, but it is the top of the line X-Mount
  • Ultimately it is up to the people and both sides are passionate

DPR: Tamron 17-70mm F2.8 Di III A-VC RXD Review Posted and Receives Silver Award

The Tamron 17-70mm F2.8 Di III A-VC RXD seems to be one of the best APS-C E-mount zooms currently available according to reviewers. You can read the full DPR review here or watch the DPRTV video review here and read its summary.

The Tamron 17-70mm F2.8 Di III-A VC RXD continues the company’s tradition of combining optical versatility with great value. A wide zoom range makes this lens great for travel, and it’s bright enough to blur backgrounds and snap sharp nighttime photos, thanks also to its vibration compensation. Sharpness and autofocus are excellent, while bokeh, distortion, flare and color fringing could be improved.

Conclusion

What we likeWhat we don’t
  • Sharp all the way to the corners, even wide-open
  • Minimal vignetting
  • Good build quality
  • Generous zoom range
  • Bright and continuous F2.8 maximum aperture
  • Compact and lightweight design make it a good travel lens
  • Surprisingly swift, quiet autofocus
  • Almost zero focus breathing
  • Affordably priced
  • Strong barrel distortion at wide end limits min. focal length
  • Strong pincushion distortion at mid- to tele-photo focal lengths
  • Quite strong onion-ring bokeh
  • Truncated bokeh at image peripheries
  • Prone to ghosting with strong light sources
  • Some LoCA noticeable too
  • No physical controls for focus or stabilization modes
  • Manual focus ring doesn’t have the best feel
