Optical Limits: Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD – A Solid Performer At A Reasonable Price

Optical limits released its review of the Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD, which you can read in full here or read the important parts of the conclusion below:

The Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD delivers a quite convincing performance with just a few caveats. Considering its ultra-wide character, it’s pretty sharp where it counts the most – the wider settings. The center quality is great and the borders/corners also on a comparatively high level between 17mm and 21mm. Many ultra-wide zoom lenses struggle a bit at their “long” end and the Tamron is no exception in this respect. While the results are good from f/5.6, the outer image field could be better at larger aperture settings here. The native distortion characteristic is very decent for such a lens and there’s nothing to worry about with image auto-correction. The vignetting figures are roughly in line with other lenses in this class. Reads: there’s some hefty vignetting at f/2.8 in RAW images. Auto-correction eases this is a bit but, a bit surprisingly, Tamron chose a non-aggressive correction profile here so you may still be able to spot some light falloff depending on the shooting conditions. The bokeh has its pros and cons. Out-of-focus highlights are comparatively nicely rendered whereas the overall rendition can be a bit harsh.

The build quality is very good relative to its price tag… advantage of this approach is the very low weight of just 420g – and we are talking about an f/2.8 lens here. Unlike its fast, in-house zoom mates, it doesn’t extend when zooming which is always something that we book on the plus side. The “moisture-resistant construction” seems to be somewhat inferior to other manufacturers – namely, there’s no word about dust protection. However, we are talking in the context of a consumer-grade lens here. We quite liked the RXD AF motor on the 28-75mm f/2.8 but on the 17-28mm f/2.8, it’s a bit on the slow side…

Overall, the Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD is a solid performer. It doesn’t excel in any criteria but it does the job and, possibly more important than that, it does so for a reasonable price.

DPRTV released a new video comparing the Fujifilm X-S10 to the Sony a6400. Below is a summary of their findings.

Handling – Fujifilm X-S10 (Win)

  • a6400 gets a bad rap, but you can get used to the bad menus, grip, poorly positioned buttons/dials
  • X-S10 is compact and has a fantastic grip with well laid out buttons and lots of great features

Displays – Tie

  • X-S10 Over a million pixels on the rear screen and it fully articulates
  • a6400 has a vertical tilting rear screen that many prefer and the EVF has the same resolution as the X-S10, but refreshes faster

Autofocus – Sony a6400 (Win)

  • Fujifilm has come a long way with its AF technology and keeps up with Sony in many areas but it is trying to be more Sony like
  • a6400 Real-time Autofocus tracking is the best by a mile and everyone wants their AF to be like Sony

Image Quality – Fujifilm X-S10 (Win)

  • a6400 has wonderful image quality
  • X-S10 has better image quality though with or without film simulations plus there isn’t much rolling shutter

Video Quality – Fujifilm X-S10 (Win)

  • The Fujifilm X-S10 can do 1080 240p and it has a mic/headphone jack with IBIS it’s miles ahead
  • a6400 has a bunch of hot air and if you want video a6600 is where you need to look from Sony

Battery Life – Sony a6400 (Win)

  • a6400 410 shot CIPA rated
  • X-S10 325 shot CIPA rated but you can use a USB-C cable to recharge or run the camera

Lens lineup – Tie

  • Fujifilm has a complete system, but no third party support
  • Sony has a complete system with third party support

Conclusion

  • Fujifilm X-S10 is a fantastic camera, but it is 2 years newer and Sony’s next camera could be very good

Atomos Ninja V Announcement For Sony Alpha 1

ANNOUNCEMENT 📣: We’re thrilled to announce the development of ProRes RAW recording from the Atomos Ninja V for Sony’s new Alpha 1! Sony’s Alpha 1 and Ninja V combination allows for a compact rig set-up with a camera that breaks existing boundaries and unleashes extended creative possibilities to creators. Add to this the ability to record data-rich 16-bit RAW from the Alpha 1, which is then compressed and recorded in the Ninja V as 12-bit ProRes RAW from the camera’s new large sensor up to 4.3Kp60.

ProRes RAW support continues to expand across camera manufacturers and models, with the range of cameras enabling ProRes RAW set to grow further in 2021.

Sirui 24mm f/2.8 Anamorphic 1.33x Review

The Sirui 24mm f/2.8 Anamorphic 1.33x has been available for a bit now, but not many have reviewed it fully. I personally really love the look of anamorphic for video and photos, but the aspect ratio can be difficult to adjust to for photography. There really is nothing quite like an anamorphic lens and sony alpha blog seems very impressed with this affordable anamorphic lens’s results. Below you can read some of the conclusions or you can read the full review at Sony Alpha Blog.

Results are very good and really give a cinematic look to your videos, that you can’t achieve by just cropping top and bottom of a traditional lens

Highly recommended !

Pros

  • Cinematic look
  • Very good to excellent sharpness
  • Very good build quality
  • Typical anamorphic flare
  • Reasonable price (1000 euros)
  • Very little focus breathing

Average

  • Limited Bokeh possibility and background blur due to the high min focusing distance of 60cm and f2.8 apeerture for a 24mm lens
  • Moderate vignetting
  • Good Color rendition but not neutral

Cons

  • Strong distorsion
  • Minimum focusing distance of 60cm

Sony Alpha 1 Video Hack Follow Up Makes The Sony A1 Even Better

Gerald Undone posted a quick video with some of his findings the other week. Now he has put it together into a longer video with some additional findings that you can watch above or you can read the key points below:

  • VG-C4EM vertical grip can give you almost dummy battery level performance
  • Can record 80-90 minutes on a single internal battery normally which fills about a 128gb SD card
  • Dummy battery there really is no limit for recording time at 8k 24p
  • You can do 8k with v60 SD cards pretty much unlimited
  • The VG-C4EM can take two or one battery which will give you about double the runtime
  • With the VG-C4EM you can record for 2hrs 45m 8k 24p
  • The camera will get very hot during this time and you will need to leave the screen out because if you have it out and put it down around 2hr it will shut off
  • The high temp shut off is needed for these results
  • The high temp shut off is really for tripod use only
  • If you use two 128gb cards and the battery grip you can fill the cards and kill the batteries in one shot
  • You probably won’t get the same results in the hot sun
  • If you use USB-C you might get worse performance with the battery in the camera (Probably heats up the battery in the camera), but it is fine with the grip
  • USB-C + Battery grip he was able to record for 3hr 15-30m or so and it didn’t overheat and probably would have run longer, but it was quite hot
  • The most economical solution might be to use the grip with one battery and a USB-C cord
  • All testing was done in a room temperature enviornment
  • More about leaving your camera in 8k internal when recording externally regardless of your external recording resolution for the best image quality
  • If you have your camera set to 8k internally your battery life is worse than if you have it set to 4k internally because the camera is downsampling the image from 8k to 4k regardless of if you are recording internally or not
  • If you set it to 1080p internal and 4k external the image on the external gets worse
  • If you set your resolution high internally and low externally it just looks better in general
