Sigma 100-400mm F5-6.3 DG DN OS | Contemporary Firmware v2 Not User Upgradable

Sigma’s Sigma 100-400mm F5-6.3 DG DN OS | Contemporary needs to be returned to Sigma for firmware update which is unfortunate since most lenses flash pretty easily through the camera now or with a USB dock or even a USB port on the lens. Since they recommend you check your firmware version before contacting them there maybe firmware version 2 lenses already shipping.

Firmware update for SIGMA 100-400mm F5-6.3 DG DN OS | Contemporary for Sony E-mount
Thank you for purchasing and using our products.

We would like to announce that a new firmware update is now available for the SIGMA 100-400mm F5-6.3 DG DN OS | Contemporary for Sony E-mount.

It has been found that the lens firmware cannot be updated from Ver.01 to Ver.02 by the end user via the camera. Therefore, SIGMA will update the lens firmware free of charge.

[Applicable product]
SIGMA 100-400mm F5-6.3 DG DN OS | Contemporary for Sony E-mount with firmware Ver.01

[How to check the current firmware version]
Please check the firmware version from the camera menu. If the lens version is firmware Ver.01 it is necessary to update to the new firmware version

[Benefits of the update]
Firmware Ver.02:

  • It has improved the phenomenon whereby the lens’ optical stabilizer effect differs depending on the shutter type and drive mode used.
  • It has corrected the phenomenon whereby the lens firmware cannot be updated via the camera.

[Treatment on this issue]
For customers who use the target product with the affected firmware version, SIGMA will update the lens firmware to Ver.02 free of charge.

Please note that customers cannot update to lens firmware Ver.02 by themselves. After the lens has been updated to Ver.02 by SIGMA, the user can then update all future lens firmware via the camera.

Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VX D Rough Size Comparison

At one point I owned every lens Tamron made for Sony-E mount and they were all excellent to very good for the price. My guess is this lens will end up being very good for the price/size/weight compared to the various E-mount lenses on the market. Sony has a few comparable lenses and I was curious how close in size this lens would be to similar lenses from Tamron so I decided to compare the Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VX D, Sony E 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS LE, Sony FE 24-240mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS, and Tamron 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III RXD using Camerasize.com.

The lens size is probably only off by a few millimeters compared to the others due to the angle of the photo, but it seems to be about the same size or even smaller than all of the lenses above. It will also be lighter than any of the above lenses except the Tamron 70-300mm, but it will not have the solid feel that Sony lenses have. This should be a great lens for travel covering a crazy 27mm-450mm due to the 1.5x crop factor of APS-C and it might even be good enough for professional use knowing Tamron.

Tamron Co., Ltd. (President: Shiro Asaka, Headquarters: Saitama City), a comprehensive optical equipment manufacturer, announces that it is developing our first Fujifilm X-mount lens at the same time as Sony E-mount.

With the release of the large-diameter standard zoom lens “28-75mm F / 2.8 Di III RXD (Model A036)” compatible with 35mm full-size mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras for Sony E-mount in 2018, it is compatible with mirrorless cameras for Sony E-mount.
