Sony RX1R III: B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama
I have owned a Sony RX1 camera in the past, and the Zeiss 35mm f/2 is pure magic that rivals even the best Leica glass around. The camera alone costs less than a Leica Summilux lens. This camera is a no-brainer considering how well Fujifilm’s fixed-lens cameras have been selling lately.

Release of the top-of-the-line integrated lens compact camera “RX1R III” that captures moving everyday moments in high quality
High-performance AF with AI recognition and a full-frame sensor with approximately 61 effective megapixels packed into a small, lightweight palm-sized body
Sony will release the RX1R III, a full-frame image sensor-equipped top-of-the-line lens-integrated compact camera. The camera is equipped with a full-frame back-illuminated Exmor R ™ CMOS image sensor with approximately 61 million effective pixels, the latest image processing engine BIONZ XR ™ , and a large-aperture ZEISS® Sonnar T* 35mm F2 lens, capturing subjects with beautiful bokeh, rich gradation performance, and the high image quality that only a full-frame can provide. Main features of the RX1R III
1. High-quality image capture with a full-frame sensor with approximately 61 effective megapixels and an integrated lens
Equipped with a full-frame back-illuminated Exmor R ™ CMOS image sensor with approximately 61 effective megapixels and a BIONZ XR ™ image processing engine, it achieves high resolution, high sensitivity, low noise performance, and a wide dynamic range. It is coated with AR (Anti-Reflection) coating to suppress unnecessary reflections on the sensor surface, and the optical low-pass filter-less specification maximizes the resolution performance of the high-pixel image sensor.

Creative Look FL2 (top) and FL3 (bottom) shooting images
The integrated lens is equipped with a ZEISS® Sonnar T* 35mm F2 lens. By optimizing the position of the lens’s optical axis and the image sensor’s imaging surface to the micron level, high optical performance and a compact lens unit are achieved. The macro ring on the lens allows you to instantly switch to macro mode, allowing you to get as close as 20cm (maximum shooting magnification: 0.26x) to the subject. It also has a step crop shooting function *2 , which allows you to smoothly switch between three levels of angle of view *3 equivalent to 35mm, 50mm, and 70mm by operating the button and dial. In addition, the high-pixel image sensor allows you to shoot with high image quality even when cropped. If you shoot in RAW format *4, you can also reselect the angle of view during post-production after shooting.
This unit is equipped with a total of 12 creative looks, including FL2 and FL3. FL2 allows for a nostalgic expression with subdued coloring, while FL3 allows for a light expression with clear coloring. Creative looks allow users to select the image creation that suits their preferences, or adjust the image to their own unique creation based on the selected mode. You can adjust the color tone, color saturation, brightness, contrast, sharpness, etc., not only for still images but also for videos, to achieve the intended atmosphere while checking the texture and color of the image on the screen when shooting.
*2 Cannot be used when recording video.
*3 When shooting in JPEG with an aspect ratio of 3:2, 35mm is L size (approximately 60 megapixels), 50mm equivalent is M size (approximately 29 megapixels), and 70mm equivalent is S size (approximately 15 megapixels).
*4 There are three types of RAW format to choose from: uncompressed, lossless compressed, and compressed.
2. The latest AI-based subject recognition AF and wide-range, high-density AF points allow you to focus on composing and shooting
Equipped with the latest AI processing unit, it can recognize the shape and movement of the subject with high accuracy, and can recognize the position of the eyes, human torso, and head with even higher accuracy. By processing using the subject’s skeletal information and posture estimation technology, it can track the subject even when the subject’s face is not visible or part of the face is hidden by sunglasses or a helmet. Subject recognition AF can be used for both still images and videos, and recognizes a wide range of subjects such as people, animals, birds, insects, cars/trains, and airplanes . When subject recognition is set to “Auto”, the camera automatically recognizes the subject and focuses using an algorithm optimized for each subject. Up to 693 *7 image plane phase difference AF points are densely arranged in an area of approximately 78% of the image sensor’s imaging area (when shooting still images). Even if the subject is only part of the screen, it will accurately capture the subject. These AF performances allow the photographer to concentrate on composition and shooting without being distracted by focusing.
*5 The camera may recognize a subject that differs from the settings.
*6 Depending on the situation, the camera may not be able to recognize the intended subject. Setting [Recognition target] to the intended subject may improve the situation.
*7 Number of AF points when shooting still images. The number of points varies depending on the shooting mode.
3. A body that combines functionality and design, and stamina thanks to a large-capacity battery
The camera has dimensions of approximately 113.3mm x 67.9mm x 74.5mm (width x height x depth) *8 and weighs approximately 498g *9 , and features a small, lightweight, flat body with no bumps or unevenness on the top surface. In addition, the positions, sizes, and tactile feel of the dials and buttons have been carefully designed to provide excellent operability. In addition, the inclusion of a Multi-Interface (MI) shoe allows for high expandability as a camera system.
The grip shape and surface texture are designed to be slip-resistant and easy to hold, despite the small size of the body. The exterior body and internal chassis are made of lightweight, highly rigid magnesium alloy, achieving a high level of robustness and compactness. The camera also features a high-resolution, high-contrast 2.36 million dot XGA OLED electronic viewfinder with a magnification of approximately 0.70x. It is compatible
with the rechargeable battery pack NP-FW50 and can take up to 300 still images. It also supports a USB Type-C ™ terminal, allowing quick charging by connecting it to a device that supports USB Power Delivery. It is also possible to shoot while supplying power from a mobile battery, etc.
*8 Depth is from the tip of the lens to the LCD monitor.
*9 Including battery and SD card.
*10 Compliant with CIPA standards. When using the LCD monitor. 270 shots when using the viewfinder.
*11 A USB PD power supply with an output of 18W (9V/2A) is recommended.
4. Design that takes into consideration the environment and accessibility
Sony is promoting the “Road to Zero” environmental plan, leveraging creativity and technology to achieve “zero environmental impact” by 2050. The manufacturing facilities (under the Sony Group) for imaging products, including this camera, run on 100% renewable energy. In addition, the individual packaging of this camera uses Sony’s original recycled paper blend material, and the bags used to wrap products are made of plant-based nonwoven fabric and paper, reducing the amount of plastic used in packaging. With accessibility in mind, the camera is equipped with a “text to speech” function *12
that reads out the menu and video playback screen to assist operation, as well as a “zoomed display” function for menus, to support the creative activities of a wide range of creators.
*12 Supported languages vary depending on the sales region.

Sirui Aurora 85mm f/1.4: Amazon / B&H Photo
The Sirui Aurora 85mm f/1.4 is a fantastic value with clean creamy bokeh, according to PP’s latest review, which you can watch above or check out the summary of their review below:
Sirui Aurora 85mm F1.4 Lens Review: A Lightweight Contender with a Few Quirks
For photographers seeking a high-quality 85mm prime lens without the hefty price tag, the Sirui Aurora 85mm F1.4 presents a compelling option. In a recent review, Chris Nichols took a deep dive into this lens, and we’ve summarized his findings for you.Lightweight Champion with Premium Features
One of the most significant advantages of the Sirui Aurora 85mm F1.4 is its weight. At just 540g for the Sony E-mount version, it’s considerably lighter than its competitors like the Sony G Master version 2 and the Viltrox 85mm F1.4 Pro. But don’t let its lightweight design fool you; this lens is packed with features often found in more expensive models. These include:
- A plastic bayonet lens hood with a rubber ring
- 67mm filter threads
- A manual focus ring
- An autofocus/manual focus selector switch
- A customizable button
- A de-clickable aperture ring
- Full weather sealing
Performance: Where Does it Shine and Where Does it Stumble?
Autofocus: The lens utilizes a classic stepping motor, which means its autofocus is not as zippy as the Viltrox Pro or Sony G Master lenses.
Image Quality:
- Bokeh: The 15-blade aperture creates a beautifully clean and round bokeh with smooth transitions, reminiscent of the much pricier Sony G Master series.
- Chromatic Aberration: While there is a minor amount of longitudinal chromatic aberration, it’s not a significant issue in most shooting situations.
- Flare: This is the lens’s main weakness. When shooting wide open, you can expect a fair amount of washed-out flare and ghosting. Stopping down the aperture helps with the washed-out effect but can make the ghosting more pronounced.
- Sharpness: The lens delivers impressive sharpness, even at its widest aperture of F1.4, from the center to the corners of the frame.
Focus Breathing: For videographers, it’s worth noting that the lens does exhibit a noticeable amount of focus breathing.
The Verdict: Great Value with a Couple of Compromises
Overall, the Sirui Aurora 85mm F1.4 offers exceptional value for its price, which is around $600. Its lightweight design, excellent build quality, and impressive image quality make it a strong contender for various camera systems. However, the slower autofocus and significant flare and ghosting are trade-offs to consider. If you’re a photographer who prioritizes portability and beautiful bokeh and can work around the lens’s few shortcomings, the Sirui Aurora 85mm F1.4 is a fantastic and affordable alternative to its more expensive counterparts.
