Optical Limits: Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD

Optical Limits posted its Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD review and it is yet another solid performer from Tamron. You can read the full review here or read the summary below:

The Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD … on the positive side, there is, of course, the very high resolution, and that’s straight from f/2.8. It is easily comparable to the best in class in this respect. 70mm may lack a little bit of contrast at f/2.8, though. Image distortions are quite normal for a modern zoom lens for mirrorless cameras – they are quite high at the extreme ends of the range without being excessive (unlike on the Sony E 16-55mm f/2.8 G at 16mm which is almost a fish-eye). Auto-correction will, of course, take care of fixing this. The amount of vignetting is very obvious in RAW files at 17mm f/2.8 and 70mm f/2.8, but, once again, auto-correction is giving a helping hand for this. The same goes for lateral CAs, which are slightly higher than average. The lens has been criticized for the quality of its bokeh, and we can see where this is coming from. Out-of-focus highlights are roughly rendered – but this isn’t unheard of among standard zoom lenses. The bokeh in the focus transition zone is actually quite decent. You may spot the occasional colored ghosting when shooting into extreme light sources, but in more conventional scenes, you should be good.

While we are quite impressed by the optical performance (after auto-correction), the build quality isn’t on the same level. This certainly “feels” like a consumer lens rather than targeting professional users. The plastic used for the lens body is a bit on the cheap side. Our sample also exhibited zoom creeping despite having a fairly lightweight inner lens tube. Tamron also omitted the usual switches for AF and image stabilizer, which is something you’d normally expect in a mid-level offering. The high AF speed and the efficient image stabilizer are on the plus side again.

If your only desire is high image quality, the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD is probably a winner. If you enjoy having tank-like build quality, you should look elsewhere, though.

Optical Limits: Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN ART – Among The Best 85mm Lenses

Optical limits posted its Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN ART review and it is yet another solid performer from Sigma. You can read the full review here or read the summary below:

The Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DN DG ART … it is among the best 85mm lenses that we have tested so far. It is plenty sharp at f/1.4 and only gets better when stopped down a little bit. The peak quality around f/4 is nothing short of outstanding. Image distortions are visible in RAW files but easily auto-corrected. The RAW vignetting is typical for a lens in this class – and, once again, there’s little to worry about with auto-correction. Lateral CAs are marginal. Conversely, axial CAs are clearly visible in critical scenes at f/1.4 and f/2. However, keep in mind that this isn’t unusual among ultra-fast lenses. The quality of the bokeh is good in the critical image background, with some nervousness in the foreground. Bokeh highlights are nicely rendered, but you’ll have to live with cat eyes near the edges. It’s a non-issue for photography, but videographers may not like that the lens exhibits pronounced focus breathing.

The build quality is exceptionally high and on the level of professional OEM lenses – other than the rather wobbly front cap. It’s also dust- and splash resistant. The Sigma lens is also surprisingly lightweight and compact for a lens of its class. The dedicated aperture ring offers a de-clicked mode, and you can customize the AF-lock button via the camera. The AF is both quite speedy and noiseless, with the usual caveat that this is heavily dependent on the camera as well.

Overall, the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DN DG ART is a winner, and it deserves our highest praise – “Highly Recommended”.

Sony FY2022 Consolidated Financial Results

Entertainment, Technology & Services (ET&S)
Results for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2023
Sales increased 136.8 billion yen (6%) year-on-year to 2 trillion 476.0 billion yen (a 4% decrease on a constant currency basis). This increase in sales was primarily due to the impact of foreign exchange rates as well as an increase in sales of digital cameras resulting from higher unit sales, partially offset by a decrease in sales of televisions resulting from lower unit sales.

Operating income decreased 33.5 billion yen year-on-year to 179.5 billion yen. This decrease in operating income was mainly due to the impact of the above-mentioned decrease in sales of televisions, partially offset by the impact of the above-mentioned increase in sales of digital cameras. During the current fiscal year, there was a 9.4 billion yen positive impact from foreign exchange rate fluctuations.

Forecast for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024
Sales are expected to decrease year-on-year due to a decrease in sales of televisions resulting from lower unit sales as well as the impact of foreign exchange rates. Operating income and Adjusted OIBDA are expected to be essentially flat year-on-year due to an increase in operating income of televisions resulting from a reduction in logistics and other operating expenses, partially offset by an increase in research and development expenses and other investment for growth areas.

Imaging & Sensing Solutions (I&SS)
Results for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2023
Sales increased 325.8 billion yen (30%) year-on-year to 1 trillion 402.2 billion yen (an 11% increase on a constant currency basis). This significant increase in sales was mainly due to the impact of foreign exchange rates and an increase in sales of image sensors for mobile products resulting from an improvement in the product mix, partially offset by a decrease in unit sales.

Operating income increased 56.6 billion yen year-on-year to 212.2 billion yen. This significant increase was mainly due to the positive impact of foreign exchange rates and the impact of the above-mentioned increase in sales, partially offset by an increase in research and development expenses as well as depreciation and amortization expenses, and an increase in manufacturing costs. During the current fiscal year, there was a 120.9 billion yen positive impact from foreign exchange rate fluctuations.

Forecast for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024
Sales are expected to increase primarily due to an expected increase in sales of image sensors for mobile products resulting from an improvement in the product mix as well as an increase in unit sales. Operating income is expected to decrease year-on-year primarily due to an increase in depreciation and amortization expenses as well as research and development expenses, an increase in manufacturing costs, and the negative impact of foreign exchange rates, partially offset by the impact of the above-mentioned increase in sales. Adjusted OIBDA is expected to increase due to the impact of the above-mentioned increase in sales, partially offset by an increase in research and development expenses, an increase in manufacturing costs, and the negative impact of foreign exchange rates.
