Phototrend Sony a9III Interview – Translated and Summarized

Sony a9III: B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama
Sony FE 300mm f/2.8 GM OSS: B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama

Phototrend posted an interview with Sony representatives that you can read in French in full here or check out the bullet points below from the interview in English:

  • The Sony a9III has a full frame stacked 24.6MP CMOS sensor that uses a global shutter with Exmor RS
  • Global shutter is the exposure and reading of all pixels on a sensor simultaneously which provides distortion-free capture of fast-moving subjects
  • Global shutter sensors are already common for industrial applications
  • Sony had to improve the image quality of global shutter technology to make it useful for photography
  • Global shutter is possible thanks to A/D conversion having memory for each pixel to store the image instantaneously
  • Sony has done its best to deal with noise performance using global shutter and they allow you to composite up to 32 RAW images to achieve low digital noise
  • Global shutter is very useful for video as well as sport and wildlife photographers
  • Sony won’t reveal specs about the BionZ global shutter image, but they will confirm it is way more powerful than past processors and it is why the a9III can shoot 120fps blackout free
  • Sony had blackout-free shooting technology 7 years ago in the a9 in 2017 and they do not like to compare themselves to other manufacturers’ technologies beyond saying Sony’s method is advanced
  • Sony has greatly improved video performance to satisfy demands, but they haven’t stopped working on still photography they have accelerated it which is why we have the a9III today
  • Sony tries to provide the best image quality at all times compared to other manufacturers and they hope to stay ahead of other manufacturers image sensors and image processing technology.
  • Sony expects the mirrorless camera market to grow and they hope to remain in the top position for market share, volume, and value in the global full-frame camera market.
  • E-mount has given Sony a good position in the camera market since its first E-mount camera in 2010 and Sony’s full-frame mirrorless development has been second to none during this time thanks to Sony being the first to release imaging technology.
  • E-mount is a big advantage covering APS-C and Full Frame sensors including Sony Cinema cameras
  • Creators Cloud allows many cameras to upload photos directly into the cloud and starting in March 2024, the Alpha 1, Alpha 9 III, Alpha 7 S III and Alpha 7 IV cases will also be compatible.
  • The 20-70mm f/4 and 24-50mm f/2.8 are very different lenses that shouldn’t compete, but complement each other since one is a general lens covering a wider range at a slower aperture and the other is a faster lens that can capture every day shots to portraits.
  • Sony’s AI isn’t only focused on subject recognition, but instead, it analyzes a scene to accurately capture the scene and white balance.
  • Sony also has AI in the creator’s cloud service to help organize and work with what you upload
