LT: Tamron 17-50mm f/4 Di III VXD Review – A New Design That Is Best For APS-C

Tamron 17-50mm f/4 Di III VXD:
B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama

Lens Tip published its full Tamron 17-50mm f/4 Di III VXD review and they have an interesting point of view. While I agree with Lens Tip that Tamron should be commended for its unique designs I do think that Tamron could have come in at a slightly better price point considering the compromises on full frame cameras. You can read the full review here or check out an excerpt below:

Pros:

  • good image quality in the frame centre across the whole focal length range,
  • decent image quality on the edge of the APS-C sensor,
  • negligible longitudinal chromatic aberration,
  • sensible correction of coma,
  • silent, quick, and accurate autofocus,
  • moderate vignetting on the APS-C sensor,
  • proper performance against bright light,
  • acceptable price/performance ratio,
  • negligible focus breathing.

Cons:

  • monstrous vignetting on full frame at 17 mm focal length,
  • weak image quality on the edge of full frame at 50 mm,
  • huge distortion at wide angles of view turning sometimes into moustache distortion,
  • some problems with spherical aberration.

Lesnumeriques: Sony a9III Review -The King of Sports Cameras

Sony a9III: B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama
Sony FE 300mm f/2.8 GM OSS: B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama

Lesnumeriques published its full review in French of the Sony a9III here, but you can find translated excerpts below:

The electronic superiority of the A9 Mark III is a small earthquake in sports photography. The combination of its global shutter sensor, the viewfinder without fading to black, its AI-assisted autofocus and its crazy bursts allows you to obtain the expected shot without fail. Any action photographer who takes the trouble to pick it up should be convinced of it. That being said, the price to pay in terms of definition and noise limits it to sports/action uses. But in these areas it is clearly the king and it will take a cutting-edge sensor and electronics to shake it up.

Pros

  • Unrivaled AF speed.
  • Best burst available.
  • Very good image quality.
  • Total absence of rolling shutter.
  • Improved grip (for larger hands).
  • Exemplary viewfinder.

Cons

  • Very high price.
  • Smaller ISO range.
  • Definition limited to 24 Mpx.
  • Rates for CFexpress-A cards.

Two Autofocus Lenses Coming From 7Artisans

7Artisans was supposed to announce the 7Artisans AF 50mm f/1.8 last December and some sites reported that it did launch, but it never became available in the United States if it did, because I have been looking for it for months now and there is no sign of the lens on their Amazon shop or website. Now asobinet is reporting that 7Artisans is working on a second Autofocus lens that might be slightly wider. Maybe we will see both lenses simultaneously in the US if we ever get them.

JJC Quick Release Plate for AirTag

JJC released an Arca Swiss quick-release plate with room for an AirTag on Amazon. It is similar to the SmallRig AirTag Generic Base Plate, but it attaches with a finger screw instead of a hex bolt so no tool is needed to attach it or remove it from the camera, which saves you a few dollars.

  • 【Quick Release Plate for Airtag】The JJC quick release plate is designed with a sleek hidden compartment to effectively conceal an Apple AirTag to easily track a camera’s location. (NOTE: AirTag is not included.)
  • 【Arca-Type Design】The Arca-Type Design Plate allows to be quickly connected to a tripod and other accessories for shooting. The base has two built-in 1/4”-20 threaded holes, which can be attached to a tripod head. In addition, it features a strap loop to be compatible with a separately wrist strap.
  • 【Reliable Quality】The tripod quick release mount is made of aluminum, sturdy and durable. The compartment cover is made of PC to avoid interfering with the tracking range of the AirTag. It has rubber pads to prevent twisting and one 1/4″-20 camera mounting screw.
  • 【Camera Compatibility】The base T slot provides a convenient way to mount on a camera and no need to remove the plate when you replace the battery or memory card. It’s compatible with Canon R100 / R50 / R10 / R8 / R7 / R6 / R5 / RP / 6D Mark II / 5D Mark II / Sony A7CR / A7C II / A7R V / A7R IV / A7 III / A6700 / A6400 / ZV-E10 / ZV-EV1 / Nikon Zf / Zfc / Z50 / Z30 / Z7 / Z6 / and more.
