CIPA September 2022 Production And Shipment Numbers Indicate Camera Market Recovery Still Happening

Digicamera-info posted the latest CIPA results with the title “Interchangeable lens camera shipments in September 2022 will grow significantly by 134.5% year-on-year (167.8% on a value basis)” which is a positive headline considering the contraction of the camera market we experienced during COVID. I hope we continue to see the market rebound, but I think the new 48MP sensor in the iPhone might make some users think twice about going to an interchangeable lens camera.

Total shipments of digital cameras in September 2022 will be 109.6% compared to the same month of the previous year (159.9% on a value basis), surpassing the same month of the previous year on a unit basis as well as last month, and significantly exceeding the previous year on a value basis. It seems that digital camera shipments have been doing well since June this year.

Of the camera shipments, lens-integrated cameras decreased by 70.5% (114.5% on a value basis) compared to the same month of the previous year, but on a value basis, they exceeded 100% for the second consecutive month. Interchangeable lenses were 134.5% compared to the same month of the previous year (167.8% on a monetary basis), a significant increase from the previous year and continue to perform well.

Of the interchangeable lenses, the number of single-lens reflex cameras shipped was 172,974 units, and the number of mirrorless cameras was 405,194 units. It seems that quite a few units have been shipped. On a price basis, mirrorless cameras are about six times higher than single-lens reflex cameras, and the unit price seems to be much higher for mirrorless cameras.
