Laowa 24mm T14 2x Periprobe Announced

Laowa 24mm T14 2x Periprobe: Venus Optics

Venus Optics announces a Periscope version of the Revolutionary Probe lens: Laowa 24mm T14 2x Periprobe
Anhui China, 30 May 2022 – Venus Optics is no stranger to creating unique yet practical lenses. The manufacturer once impressed the world with its innovative 24mm Probe lens. A lens that has a wide-angle 2X magnification, bug-eye perspective and a waterproof barrel. Today, they are proud to present another weirdest but extremely practical lens – The NEW Laowa 24mm T14 2x Periprobe. This full-frame powerhouse inherits most of the renowned Laowa Probe lens characteristics but with a twist. It now comes with a 90° periscope-like front tip for creating formerly impossible shots and makes setups more flexible. The lens is also able to do 360° helix rotation to create one-of-a-kind motions.  Furthermore, it has a 1/4″ thread at the front for attaching accessories such as extra lighting or magic arms. It comes with Arri PL, Canon EF, Canon R, Nikon F, Nikon Z, Sony E and L mount.

The Periprobe lens will make its US debut in the Laowa booth in Cinegear show during 9-11 June (Booth#324), together with the Laowa Nanomorph lenses.

More usages can be realised
Periprobe is a very functional tool that frees your creativity. It is not barely poking into the water or sliding in and sliding out. There are a lot more usages that you can explore with this lens.

  1. Periscope
Users can hold up or down the camera with the periprobe to create a periscope perspective. It is useful when you shoot something unreachable like the tree hole at 7’ tall or the crab hiding in an underwater cave. It also makes your set-ups easier since you do not need a big tank and a waterproof housing for the shots.
  2. Stay close to the ground
It is difficult for photographers to film closely to the ground as there are always restrictions in set-ups, like the cameras and the lens itself are always obstacles. Some users would dig a hole in the ground for the cameras or need a more complicated pre-shoot set-ups. With Periprobe, you could simply stick the lens tip to the ground.
  3. Face up & face down
With 2x magnification, 85° wide AoV and close working distance, users could create a special close up face up and face down shot that other lenses cannot do.
  4. 45° tilt-up
Tilting up is never a rare perspective you can see in galleries. However, shooting something very small and close to the ground is nearly impossible without a Periprobe as the camera is always a big hindrance. Users can now capture from a looking up bug-eye perspective.
  5. Travel through tight space
It is nearly impossible to travel between objects that are close to each other unless you make a complicated mechanism with programs to move the objects back and forward to prevent collision. It is very time consuming and a pain for videographers to have these pre-shoot preparations. With Periprobe, you could simply travel through the tight space by rigging the cameras on sliders and tripods.
  6. Spinning shots
Users could unrelease the orientation ring to spin the lens along the axis which could create special movements.

360° Rotation
Users could use the clutch mechanism to unlock the orientation ring for perspective adjustment and different motion movements. The 0.8 Mod gear allows users to install the focus gear for smooth perspective movements.

0° & 90° interchangeable
There is a direct view module included in the lens set. Users could switch back to the probe perspective with a few simple installation steps.

Extra threaded tip (1/4”)
The threaded tip allows for the mounting of accessories like lighting or provides an attachment point for stabilization.

Bug-eye perspective
The 24mm T14 2x Periprobe has a wider 85° perspective than other macro lenses in which more background information can be captured. The lens can focus really close to the subjects i.e. working distance=0.8”/2cm at 2x magnification. It makes everything bigger than life-size with great details to create a stunning ‘bug-eye perspective’.

2x magnification
With the 2x maximum magnification and 2cm minimum working distance, users would have higher flexibility to shoot subjects of different sizes. More textures and details can be captured with higher magnification.

Deep depth of field
The Periprobe has a wider perspective than other telephoto macro lenses and the aperture range starts from T14 to T40; therefore, it would have a greater depth of field at close distances. It is beneficial when shooting wildlife and in a studio as more information about the background can be included.

Long & tubular lens barrel
The long and tubular lens barrel makes itself more accessible to different subjects. With the 40cm/15.7” long barrel, you could poke it into different tight spaces like tree holes, Lego houses, etc. Users could also stay at a safe distance from the subjects.

Waterproof barrel
The front barrel of the periprobe is waterproof so users could make underwater shots without a housing to get unique shots that other lenses cannot do. Users could also make use of this feature to create a first-person view like pouring liquid on the lens.

LED Lite
The lens has a smaller aperture to create a deeper depth of field. The LED lite at the tip of the lens provides additional lighting to compensate for the lack of illumination from the small aperture. The Periprobe features a stronger power of LED ring lite than the probe lens, which brings extra flexibility to users. An included variable-output control cable allows you to adjust the amount of light from the LED.

0.7x focal reducer for APS-C and M43 users
The 24mm T14 2x Periprobe is designed for full frame cameras. However, APS-C and Micro Four Thirds users can now pair up the lens with a 0.7x focal reducer which is dedicatedly designed for probe lens. It maintains the perspective of the lens by reducing the crop from the APS-C and M43 sensors, while it boosts the light to f/10.

Lens support for Periprobe
This lens support is specially designed for Laowa 24mm T14 2x Periprobe for extra support of the lens barrel. It is compatible with both Direct View Module and 90° Module.
