DPRTV released their preview of the Sony a7RIV and it’s obviously pretty positive. Below are excerpts from the video:
- The Sony a7RIV gives us a look at what will be coming with the Sony a7SIII and other cameras
- Very good high ISO performance
- Rolling shutter is severe so the electronic shutter isn’t very useful
- Great AF, which Sony is known for
- Real-time tracking is their favorite AF system
- Great new EVF that is beautiful
- 120fps EVF at lower resolution and 60fps with better image quality
- Return of pixel shift and it works a little differently because it can shoot 16 instead of 4 to get a 240MP photo, but there is no way to preview it on the camera
- Pixel shift works with their image edge software which isn’t great
- Major ergonomic changes
- More usable joystick
- Bigger AF on button and front dial along with an improved on and off switch
- Locking exposure compensation dial on the top which doesn’t need to be heald in
- The back top dial isn’t great on the beta hardware but might be fixed on the final camera
- The new sensor is the biggest difference between the a7RIII and a7RIV
- You will want to use super 35 if you want the best image quality
- Super 35 is a 1.6x crop shooting at 24p and a 1.8x crop at 30p
- Picture profiles are the same as a7RIII
- HLG isn’t technically HLG if it’s not 10-bit
- Eye detect AF and real-time tracking while filming video is impressive
- Real-time tracking in video is hidden in the menus
- Disappointed in the a7RIV as a video camera and hope it will be better with the Sony a7SIII or maybe they will call is a7SIV
- Have been asking Sony to improve basic things like the touch screen and menus for years, but Sony has largely ignored the criticisms
- At the Sony a7RIV’s price point it is hard to dismiss the camera as a viable high-resolution model
- The full review will come when they get a production camera
