Sony Continues to Assert 2nd Place Full Frame Position in The World

dc.watch released a rather lengthy article that doesn’t translate very well, about a meeting Sony hosted relating to the growth of Sony cameras and how things are looking up since recovering from the Kumamoto earthquake. Thankfully digicame-info’s summary of the article translates more clearly so we can better understand Sony’s presentation.

Domestic share of Sony lens interchangeable full size camera is second place

An article on the industry trend of Mirror-less mentioned at digital experience Watch, Sony’s α7 R III experiences meeting is posted.

· Sony A, which continues to perform well, the influence of the truth “α 7 R III” on the market is

  • Sony held an experiential meeting of “α 7 R III” announced on October 25 in Tokyo.First of all, at the experiential meeting, the good condition of the mirrorless camera market was told.
  • The domestic market of the digital camera as a whole has been on a downward trend since 2014, and the decrease of compact digital cameras is remarkable, in particular.Mirrorless cameras began to emerge as lens interchangeable cameras could not escape from the declining trend without missing examples. Specifically, in the first half of 2017, single lens reflex cameras only slightly decreased by 95% compared to the same period of the previous year, whereas mirrorless cameras achieved a 24% increase. Looking at the composition ratio, 56% of single-lens reflex cameras and 44% of mirrors-less cameras are no longer different (all amounts are).
  • Of the mirrorless cameras, α has seen decreasing once in 2016 when the Kumamoto earthquake occurred, but it turned to expansion again in the first half of 2017. As a result, Sony’s share of the full-size lens interchangeable camera is 29% unit, 18% amount (* Note: this part is an error in the original article, 18% seems to be the share of the interchangeable lens’ amount) Record. Both of them gained the second largest domestic position (according to GfK Japan investigation).

The article that “Sony’s full-size share became second place” was published earlier overseas, but it seems that Sony’s full-sized machine’s share is second in Japan as well.

Following α9 which gathered topics with AF and continuous shooting performance, α 7 R III of a new high pixel machine also appeared, so it is expected that market share will grow in the future.

Also, the market share of mirrorless cameras in the first half of this year is 44% on a monetary basis, so it came to almost the same point as the SLR.

[Additional notes] Looking at Sony’s slide, it seems that there is an error in the original article text, and “18%” in the article seems to be the share of the amount of interchangeable lenses.
