Gary Fong Launches α9 Feature Finder App

Gary Fong Launches α9 Feature Finder App
Sony cameras are designed to work like photographers think and see. Working closely with photographers to understand what they want and need in a camera, Sony engineers constantly strive to incorporate a vast array of advanced technology and capabilities into every new model. The result is that there’s a lot of technology and customization you can set to make the camera a true extension of your eye. But finding and setting everything isn’t always easy, especially when you’re new to the camera.

With that in mind, Gary Fong has just launched a new app, Feature Finder for Sony α9. The app is much more than just a searchable manual, it’s interactive. Users can find features and function as well as report their descriptions of those features and functions. The app is a living tool that gives you full access to the power in the camera.

We spoke with Gary Fong to learn more about Feature Finder. “I made it because I know the α9 inside and out,” Fong says. “Whenever I would try to change a feature, even with the My Menu and customizing everything, it was easy to miss things. We thought ‘wouldn’t it be cool if we had an index that you could just type it in, and that would also show you what the description of that feature does?’ That’s what the app does. It’s extremely simple, but I use it all the time when I’m shooting.”

The app also solves the problem of potentially lagging after a firmware update because of the user interactivity. Fong explains, “The app updates instantly because when users see changes, they just type in the change they’ve noticed and their suggestion. That goes to us and we look at it and see that there’s been a firmware update and we go through it and update the app. Because we’ve created an architecture that’s table oriented, it’s super fast for us to change anything. That was a lot of the work behind the app. It looks like it’s super simple, but it’s not. The ability to change and adapt to any new firmware upgrades fast was a really big thing for us, and the user response is huge because we’ll have thousands of hours of continuous use from photographers.”

Feature Finder for the α9 is currently available in the iTunes store for iOS and apps for the α6000, α6300, α6500, α7 II and α7R II are in the works.

Sony FY2017 Q1 Financial Report

Sony released their FY2017 Q1 report today and sales are up, but they aren’t as bullish about sales as they were for FY2017, which ends in March 2018 so they revised projections for FY2017 down. It seems Sony is expecting lower image sensor sales for mobile products and exchange rates to cut into their profits for FY2017.

Sales increased 41.4% year-on-year (a 38% increase on a constant currency basis) to 204.3 billion yen. This increase was primarily due to a significant increase in unit sales of image sensors for mobile products, as well as the absence of the impact of a decrease in image sensor production due to the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquakes in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year, partially offset by a significant decrease in sales of camera modules, a business which was downsized.

Sales are expected to be lower than the April forecast primarily due to lower-than-expected image sensor unit sales for mobile products, partially offset by the impact of foreign exchange rates. Operating income is expected to be higher than the April forecast mainly due to lower-than-expected production costs as well as the positive impact of foreign exchange rates, partially offset by the impact of the above-mentioned decrease in sales.

Sony FS5 Firmware 4.0 Pulled Due To Isolated Bug

Last week Sony released firmware 4.0 for the Sony FS5, which enabled:
1.     Support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) by shooting in Hybrid Log-Gamma** (HLG) standard
2.     Support for continuous 120fps High Frame Rate (HFR) recording in 1080p with CBKZ-FS5HFR (sold separately)
3.     Option to change the minimum ISO sensitivity number to ISO 2000 from ISO 3200 when recording S-Log2/S-Log3
*4K: XAVC-Long 4:2:0 8-bit, HD: XAVC 4:2:2 10-bit.

They later pulled the firmware and issued an official statement

Sony has temporarily suspended the new firmware updates for PXW-FS5 and PXW-Z150 due to a minor issue found during testing within the HDR function in the Picture Profile menu. These will be fixed in a new firmware version, v4.01 for the PXW-FS5 and v2.01 for the PXW-Z150, which will be released in the coming weeks.

If the most recent firmware version has already been downloaded we advise to download v4.01 or v2.01 as soon as it becomes available. If there are any further questions please contact the Prime Support team on 00800 7898 7898 and they will be happy to answer your questions.

There is no need to panic if you installed the latest version. Cinema5d found out that the problem is an isolated bug  “these issues only occur in specific applications of HLG in HD shooting modes”, so it should be easy to avoid the problem until the update is released in August.

DXO: Sony FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM OSS Sharpest Zoom Scored, But 5th Highest DXOMark Score

The Sony FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM OSS is an impressive performer and I can’t wait to see more real world results, but until then we will have to rely on sources like DXO that have scored the lens very high in sharpness, but not overall. The shortcomings DXO list is some vignetting wide-open.

Telephoto zoom lenses like this tend to be quite large and unwieldy, and are inclined to be sharper at the shorter end of the zoom range. They also often have troublesome chromatic aberration that contributes to the decline in image quality, particularly at the longer end (where you need it the most).

While there has been some slightly improved performance in more recent models, such as the Canon EF 100-400mm 4.5-5.6L IS II, Sony’s new FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM OSS stands out not only for its seismic shift in sharpness, but also for being not much different in size to the FE 70-200mm F2.8. Best of all, perhaps, is that for once there’s a tele-zoom that offers seriously impressive image quality at that prized 400mm focal length.

Highlights

  • Compact and relatively light in weight
  • High sharpness levels throughout the zoom range, especially at 400mm
  • Low lateral color aberration

Potential shortcomings

  • Some vignetting wide-open
