Exclusive! Sony Goes Medium Format With The Sony R1

Sony is going to release its first medium-format interchangeable lens camera, the Sony R1. This powerhouse will utilize Sony’s latest medium-format sensor—a 44×33mm stacked, backside-illuminated CMOS sensor with approximately 100 megapixels—delivering exceptional detail and dynamic range. Its advanced global shutter provides leaf shutter–level performance, enabling any flash to sync at speeds up to 1/16,000th of a second so that even an on-camera flash can overpower the sun.

The R1 features a unique rangefinder-inspired design with a high-resolution electronic viewfinder, appealing to both professional photographers and hipsters alike. Additionally, Sony will offer a mount adapter that lets users attach any Sony E-mount lens, expanding creative possibilities beyond native medium-format glass.

Sensor & Image Processing
Sensor: The R1 is powered by Sony’s latest 44×33mm medium-format sensor engineered at approximately 100 megapixels. This backside-illuminated, stacked CMOS sensor features an optional global shutter mode, eliminating rolling shutter artifacts and providing leaf shutter-level performance.
Image Processor: Utilizing the next-generation BIONZ XR processor with dual neural engine technology, the R1 supports 16-bit RAW output and rapid continuous shooting. This ensures exceptional detail, vibrant color, and outstanding performance in both stills and 8K video.

ISO & Dynamic Range
Native ISO: Optimized for low noise, the sensor starts at ISO 50/64 for maximum dynamic range.
ISO Range: The R1 offers an ISO range from approximately 50 to 12,800, with expandable options for extreme lighting conditions.
Dynamic Range: Achieving around 15 stops of dynamic range, the dual-gain architecture preserves fine details in both shadows and highlights, making it ideal for challenging high-contrast scenes.

Autofocus & AI Features
AF System: The R1 employs a high-precision hybrid autofocus system that covers nearly the entire sensor. With hundreds of phase-detection points and advanced contrast detection, the camera locks focus quickly even in low light.
AI-Powered Recognition: Enhanced by cutting-edge AI, the R1 offers intelligent subject recognition that can track faces, eyes, animals, and even small details like insects. This ensures reliable focus during high-speed bursts and cinematic video capture.

Shutter & Flash Synchronization
Global Shutter: With its advanced global shutter technology, the R1 eliminates rolling shutter distortion, providing crisp, clear images even in fast-paced scenes.
Flash Sync: The electronic shutter supports flash synchronization at speeds up to 1/16,000th of a second. This breakthrough enables the on-camera flash to overpower even bright sunlight, expanding creative possibilities for high-speed photography.

Video Capabilities
Recording: The R1 can record internal 8K Ultra HD video at up to 60p in 10-bit 4:2:2, along with 4K recording up to 120p for stunning slow-motion footage.
Formats: It supports professional codecs such as ProRes and H.265, plus offers a 12-bit RAW video output via HDMI for maximum post-production flexibility.
Thermal Management: An advanced cooling system ensures extended 8K video recording without overheating, making the R1 as capable in video as it is in still photography.

Viewfinder & Rear Display
Electronic Viewfinder (EVF): In a true rangefinder spirit, the R1 features a high-resolution EVF with a wide, natural field of view. The EVF provides crisp, lifelike previews with minimal lag and includes advanced overlays such as focus peaking, zebras, and customizable digital aids.
Rear LCD: A 3.2-inch tilting touchscreen delivers intuitive menu navigation, live view, and playback. It’s designed for both studio use and on-the-go shooting, offering brilliant clarity and responsiveness.

Storage & Connectivity
Media: Dual card slots are provided – one CFexpress Type B slot for high-speed recording and one UHS-II SD slot for versatility and backup.
Ports: The R1 is equipped with a full-size HDMI port, a high-speed USB-C port for tethered shooting and power delivery, as well as standard mic and headphone jacks.
Wireless: Built-in Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth allow rapid file transfers, remote control via a smartphone app, and seamless integration into modern workflows.
Mount Adapter: Sony will also release a dedicated mount adapter that lets you attach any Sony E-mount lens to the R1, expanding creative options and lens versatility.

Body Design & Power
Build: The R1 boasts a rugged, weather-sealed magnesium alloy chassis with a retro rangefinder aesthetic. Its minimalist design and tactile analog controls – including dedicated dials for shutter speed and exposure – deliver a classic look paired with modern performance.
Portability: Despite its medium-format internals, the R1 is remarkably compact and lightweight, making it ideal for street photography, travel, and creative on-location shoots.
Battery: Powered by Sony’s high-capacity NP-FZ100 battery, the R1 offers an estimated 500 shots per charge for still photography and up to 40 minutes of continuous 8K video recording. USB-C Power Delivery enables convenient in-field charging, ensuring you’re always ready to shoot.

Additional Innovations
Pixel Shift Mode: A multi-shot pixel shift function creates ultra-high-resolution composite images (up to 400MP) by capturing multiple frames with slight sensor shifts, perfect for static subjects requiring maximum detail.
Customizability: The R1’s interface is highly configurable, with programmable function buttons and custom menus to tailor the camera’s behavior to your creative style.
Silent Shooting: The all-electronic shutter operation allows completely silent shooting – ideal for discreet street photography or sensitive environments.
Intelligent Exposure: Advanced metering and real-time exposure analysis, supported by the dual neural engine, ensure accurate exposure and stunning color reproduction in every shot.

Sony VENICE 2 Extension System Mini: B&H Photo / Adorama

The Sony VENICE 2 Mini that Sony has been teasing was finally announced.

Sony VENICE 2 Extension System Mini Overview
Super-Compact, Lightweight Sensor Extension

Increase your pro cine-style capture mobility and ease of use with the E and PL-mount VENICE 2 Extension System Mini from Sony. Compatible with VENICE 2 8K and 6K cameras, this 8.6K mini successor to the Rialto sensor block extension is super compact and lightweight, letting you position your camera in the tightest setups.

70% Smaller Form for Increased Mobility

  • This mini extension system separates the sensor block and lens from the body of your VENICE 2 camera, greatly increasing your mobility without lessening the full-frame image quality.
  • Ideal for handheld and gimbal use and jib, crane, and car rigs, this super compact and lightweight system is 70% smaller than the prior version, enabling you to capture shots from tight spaces that were previously inaccessible.

Detachable Cables
The mini extension system features a 14.8′ detachable cable for transmitting video and metadata, letting you first easily position it in your setup and then connect it to your camera body. An optional 39.3′ cable is available separately.

Drop-In ND Filter System
Quickly control your exposure using the included drop-in ND filter system. The included nine-filter set comprises clear, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9, 1.2,1.5, 1.8, 2.1, and 2.4 gradations with additional filters available separately.

Full-Frame 8.6K VENICE 2 Sensor
This extension is built around the same full-frame 8.8K sensor found in the VENICE 2 8K camera. Its compatibility with both the VENICE 2 8K and VENICE 2 6K means existing VENICE 2 6K owners can now access 8.6K capture with the v4.0 firmware update.

Cooke /i Metadata
The PL-mount lens mount adapter supports Cooke /i protocol metadata and the import of external lens data.

Built-In Gyro with Metadata
This sensor block has a built-in gyro sensor for capturing tilt and roll metadata, improving your editing and post-production workflow.

Assignable User Buttons
Two user-assignable buttons provide quick access to key camera functions like run/stop and false color and light up when in use.

Sony E-Mount with ARRI PL Adapter
This Sony E-mount extension includes an ARRI PL adapter, letting you use a wide array of lenses. Rear flange adjustment is supported for fine-tuning select lenses.

Requires Latest Firmware
The VENICE 2 firmware v.4.0, released in August of 2025, will be required to use the Extension System Mini.

3D/Virtual Reality Capture
Use two VENICE 2 cameras and mini extensions to capture stereoscopic images for an immersive, more natural-looking experience.

VFX Plate Capture
This compact, lightweight system is ideal for creating a VFX or virtual production background rig using multiple extension units for 360° capture.
