Nissin MG80 Pro: The Power of Integration

The power of integration – Nissin MG80 Pro
Nissin Japan Limited (Chairman Mr. Goto Chikara) proudly announces the launch of MG80 Pro which is an advanced NAS 2.4Ghz*1 built-in commander strobe for both on and off-camera. It is a 60GN (83 w/s) powerful strobe and equipped with a patented wide variety battery choice system. Moreover, it provides a master / slave feature for more operation flexibility. The MG80 Pro fully supports the current Nissin NAS strobes. The package comes with a flash stand, filter holder and wide-angle diffuser. Fully compatible with Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, Panasonic and Olympus systems and it will be available in the market on late May 2019.

Wide Variety Battery System – Patented and effective design
The Wide Variety Battery System supports all types of AA size batteries, including Li-ion (14500 type), rechargeable NiMH and alkaline batteries. Using 14500 type rechargeable Li-ion batteries will result in a faster recycling time of 1.5 seconds consistently at full power while rechargeable NiMH batteries recycle at approximately 4 seconds at full power.  ( All batteries are sold separately )

Durable Quartz Tube and high heat-resistant material adopted
A Durable Quartz Tube and high heat-resistant material are adopted to significantly reduce heat effects of the flash. Combining these design elements, the MG80 Pro achieves 1000 full power flashes without any adverse heat effects.

Built-in Air 10s commander and master slave
MG80 Pro has a  built-in NAS commander which means the maximum wireless control distance will be 100 meters, which is the same as Nissin Air 10s Commander. It supports TTL mode, M mode, HSS (FP sync) up to 1/8000 sec., rear curtain sync and other functionalities wirelessly. Moreover, MG80 Pro can also act as a master flash when shooting with another slave strobes.

High power LED modeling (8W) with silent cooling system
The 8W LED modelling light is a perfect match for studio applications. A Silent Cooling System provides a safe and sound environment during the shooting process.

WARNING: EF-S 18-135/3.5-5.6 IS ‘Nano’ USM is incompatible with any Speed Booster, even after modification by removing the rear plastic shroud, because the rear element of the lens interferes with the front element of Speed Booster at 18mm (before boost). DPR: Sony a6400 Receives Gold Award

The Sony a6400 has earned a DPReview Gold Award. You can read the summary of why bellow or the full article here.

“It’s hard to overstate just how good the autofocus system is on the Sony a6400. It’s got one of the best implementations out there: not just in its price range, but on the market, period. Once you set the system up, you can pretty much leave it alone for almost any type of photography, whether you’re photographing people, landscapes, sports, you name it.

And Sony didn’t stop at autofocus; relative to its predecessor, the a6400 sports an updated menu system, a touchscreen that tilts all the way up for the all-important selfie, reduced risk of overheating while shooting 4K video, and more. But as we stated in our first impressions, at least as much of the story about the a6400 is about what Sony hasn’t changed, and really should have.”

What we likeWhat we don’t
  • Industry-leading autofocus implementation
  • Good JPEG and Raw image quality
  • Fast burst rates
  • Detailed 4K video, slow mo 1080p
  • No official video record limit, more overheat-resistant than predecessor
  • Compact, lightweight design
  • Claimed weather-sealing
  • Screen tilts up 180°, or down almost 90°
  • High-quality electronic viewfinder
  • Good battery life
  • Wi-fi with Bluetooth and NFC
  • Built-in flash that is ‘bounceable’
  • Good customization options, including customizable ‘My Menu’
  • USB charging
  • Ergonomics are hit-and-miss
  • Default JPEG colors aren’t our favorite
  • Autofocus system can be confusing at first, with redundant or unnecessary settings
  • Lack of in-body stabilization may limit video and low-light shooting
  • SD slot is UHS-I, with slow write times
  • Lossy compressed Raws, no option for lossless or uncompressed
  • No in-camera Raw processing
  • Tap-to-track in video must be enabled and disabled in the menu
  • 4K/30p comes with a crop
  • Pronounced rolling shutter artifacts in video and using silent shutter
  • Doesn’t ‘remember’ your exposure settings between stills and video

ZEISS Ventum 21mm f/2.8 Announced

The previously leaked ZEISS Ventum 2.8/21 has been formally announced. The press release is below and it should be available soon. B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama

Press release:

ZEISS Ventum 2.8/21: High Precision from a Bird’s Eye View
Lightweight industrial lens with E-mount for use with drones
With the release of the ZEISS Ventum 2.8/21, ZEISS presents a particularly lightweight wide-angle lens that enables long-range shots that are rich in detail. The focus is on the use of drones. “To enable more efficient workflows for industrial customers, the ZEISS Ventum 2.8/21 had to be compact and lightweight without compromising on quality,” says Michael Pollmann, product manager at ZEISS. “Thanks to its special design with a fixed focus, the ZEISS Ventum 2.8/21 weighs just half that of the comparable ZEISS Interlock Compact 2.8/21.” Thanks to its low weight, the drone consumes less energy and can remain airborne for longer.

Highly detailed images for demanding applications
The ZEISS Ventum 2.8/21 was designed for full-format cameras with E-mount and an image circle of up to 43 millimeters. Its fixed focus is set up to cover a maximum area of focus: at aperture F8, for instance, all objects between a distance of around three meters and infinity are reproduced in high definition. This allows the drone to fly at different heights without the pilot having to worry about readjusting the focus. “What’s more, the lens offers high levels of contrast, resolution and color fidelity across the entire imaging area,” says Pollmann. “This saves time in data acquisition and data processing, resulting in higher-quality images.” Furthermore, ghosts are minimized thanks to the ZEISS T* antireflective coating.

These properties make the ZEISS Ventum 2.8/21 suitable for a multitude of drone applications, but also for stationary applications outdoors: inspections and surveys, three-dimensional model creation, damage assessments, monitoring of events, and much more.

A sealed housing
In an industrial setting, a lens must be able to withstand all weathers. “The whole design must therefore be dust- and weather-resistant,” says Pollmann. “The ZEISS Ventum 2.8/21 is protected against the finest dust and splashes. Even extreme temperatures and high humidity are no problem for this lens.”

Price and availability
The ZEISS Ventum 2.8/21 is available now. The recommended retail price is 1,500 euros (plus 19 percent sales tax).
