Mitakon Speedmaster 50mm f/0.95 III Review: A Minimal Improvement Over The Mark II

By Louis Ferreira | Published: November 13, 2019

0.95 lenses are something special and the Mitakon Speedmaster 50mm f/0.95 III is probably the most affordable 0.95 that you might want to buy. This lens is basically the same as the Mark II lens so I included the Mark III review above and the Mark II below. The differences are:

  • The fake leather case from the previous version is gone, but you get a case now
  • The size is a little smaller, but the weight is about the same
  • The build is about the same
  • Small cosmetic differences at the front
  • Aperture blades are not flat instead of curved
  • New focus ring is more precise and turns about 360 degrees so easier to focus
  • Hood now clips onto the front better than before
  • Image quality is about the same as the old
  • Not the sharpest lens in the world, but sharp in the center at 0.95
  • Better flare control that comes from a new internal design or better optical coating
  • Slightly more contrast than the Mark II

Sony Dominates DPReview’s 2019 Buyer Guides

By Louis Ferreira | Published: November 12, 2019

DPReview has a lot of influence in the world of photography, which is good news for Sony since they dominated all of DPR’s 2019 buyer guides except their under $500 guide. The Sony a7R IV and Sony a6600 were at the top of almost every list and the Sony a6100 being on the more family/budget conscious lists. The Sony a7III and a7RIII also made a few lists along with the Sony DSC-RX100 VII.

Sony to Build New CIS Fab After 12 Years Hiatus

By Louis Ferreira | Published: November 11, 2019

Sony will invest 100 billion yen ($918 Million USD) to build a new image sensor fab next year that should come online by April 2021. Sony’s last production expansion was in 2016 when they bought the Toshiba CIS plant in Oita Prefecture. It has been 12 years since Sony last built a sensor fabrication plant from the ground up, which was the Kumamoto Prefect fab in 2017.

The new plant will is planned to be built on a 74,800 square meter site that is adjacent to an existing fab in Isahaya, Nagasaki Prefecture. Sony hasn’t decided on the plant’s capacity yet, but it should be tens of thousands of wafers per month when finished. Sony believes it can increase its market share from 50% today to 60% by 2025.

“Originally the plans were laid in response to the huge mobile phone market but going forward image sensors will be in demand in various areas related to the ‘internet of things.’ They also eventually will be used in applications related to autonomous driving,” CFO Hiroki Totoki told a news briefing.
