Sony ‘s Press Conference for NAB now Rescheduled to Monday April 20th 9:00 am PST / 12:00 EST
Sony continues daily monitoring of the evolving situation around the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) which has seen an escalation globally and, as such, is taking various precautionary measures.

As we place the utmost importance on the safety and wellbeing of our employees, partners and industry colleagues, we support the difficult but important decision from National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show 2020 (https://nabshow.com/2020/attend/onsite-services/coronavirus-update-and-resources/) to no longer hold the Las Vegas conference in April.

We are eager to share our innovations with the NAB community digitally via press conference time of 9:00am PST on Monday April 20, 2020.

Sony would like to thank the community of innovators for their understanding and ongoing support during these challenging times. Our thoughts remain with those who are suffering from this tragedy.

C-4 Precision Optics 4.9mm f/3.5 Hyper Fisheye 270-Degree Field of View for Sony E

The C-4 Precision Optics 4.9mm f/3.5 is a specialty, Hyper Fisheye lens with a ridiculous 270-degree field of view. It provides a fully-circular fisheye image on full frame Sony E-mount cameras. Key features include:

  • Designed for full frame Sony E-mount cameras
  • Fully-circular fisheye image on full frame cameras
  • 270-degree field of view on full frame cameras
  • Looks like a spaceship beaming up your camera

Step right up and get in line for this product by placing your reservation now. We fill orders on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Widest Fisheye Lens Ever Manufactured. What started as a 2015 April Fools Day tease has now come to life! The C-4 Precision Optics 4.9mm f/3.5 lens is a specialty lens among specialty lenses. The Hyper Fisheye angle of view on the fully-manual lens provides 270-degrees of coverage that is captured as a circular fisheye image on full-frame E-mount cameras. Check out this photo as a visual example of the lens on a full frame mirrorless body.

It’s Large & Heavy. This lens will not work well in situations that don’t allow for heavy-duty tripod mounting on account of the large amount of glass required to make this wide-angle feat possible. The lens weighs an impressive 28.6-pounds. A lens base with extendable legs is included for horizontal applications and to use as handles. This is a mount the camera on the lens kinda situation.

E-Mount Compatibility. This lens will accommodate Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras inside the lens base but also allows for LWS rail mounting on larger E-mount cinema cameras. The iris and focus rings are geared and ready for accessories.

Optics. Five extra-low dispersion elements keep chromatic aberrations in check, and the entire lens is designed, assembled, and calibrated by the masterful hands at C-4 Precision Optics.

Why? This lens was built with full dome imaging, VR, and 360-video applications in mind, but more importantly, to prove it could be done.

NAB Show Canceled Due To Coronavirus

March 11, 2020

Dear NAB Show community,

As you know, we have been carefully monitoring coronavirus developments both domestically and globally over the past few weeks.

In the interest of addressing the health and safety concerns of our stakeholders and in consultation with partners throughout the media and entertainment industry, we have decided not to move forward with NAB Show in April. We are currently considering a number of potential alternatives to create the best possible experience for our community.

This was not an easy decision. Fortunately, we did not have to make this decision alone, and are grateful to our NAB Show community for engaging with us as we grappled with the rapidly-evolving situation. This Show is as much yours as it is ours, and it is important to us that we move forward together.

For nearly 100 years, NAB Show has provided superior value and the best possible experience for exhibitors and attendees. We knew that if we could not deliver on those expectations, we would not move forward. More importantly, keeping the community safe and healthy is NAB’s highest priority; therefore, we are deferring to the developing consensus from public health authorities on the challenges posed by coronavirus.

We are still weighing the best potential path forward, and we ask you for your patience as we do so. We are committed to exploring all possible alternatives so that we can provide a productive setting where the industry can engage with the latest technology, hear from industry thought leaders and make the game-changing connections that drive our industry forward.

I want to stress that despite our disappointment at how this year’s Show has been impacted by global public health concerns, we are more excited than ever about the future of NAB Show and our relationship with you.

We are grateful for each and every member of our Show community. It is your passion for the industry that makes NAB Show a success year after year, and it is that same passion that will drive us into the future as we look ahead to new possibilities later this year and beyond.

Sincerely,

Gordon H. Smith
President and CEO

DXO: Sony a9II Sensor Review

DXOMark just published their review of the sensor inside the Sony a9II and Sony ever so slightly tweaked the sensor form the original Sony a9. You can read the full review here or you can see part of the conclusion below:

Sony says that the a9 II has the same sensor as the original a9, but as we’ve seen the new model adopts a different approach to processing, using a change in sensitivity behavior both to improve color discrimination and to widen dynamic range at higher ISOs. It’s the first time we’ve seen this and it marks a shift in strategy for Sony.

The Sony a9 II is certainly a niche camera, built to compete alongside the Canon EOS-1 DX Mark II and Nikon D5. However, while it’s unlikely that individual photographers or agencies would switch from those rival cameras, bearing in mind their investment in lenses, the Sony a9 II’s high sensor performance and lower price would be tempting for newcomers thinking of entering the competitive field of sports journalism.

Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD at WPPI

Tamron was at WPPI with the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD and Sara with Tamron posted some photos to her page, which you can see above. Further, Matt Granger grabbed one from the booth for a bit which you can see below. The new Tamron 70-180mm looks like it is nicely proportioned for Sony mirrorless cameras. Maybe they will follow up with a 180mm to 500mm or 600mm in the near future.

Jinbei TR-Q7 Multi Brand Canon/Nikon/Sony/Fuji/Panasonic/Olympus TTL Trigger

Jinbei released a multi-brand trigger last year, that was missed, which supports Sony cameras the Jinbei TR-Q7, which you can now find on Amazon. This is a very interesting trigger that even allows photographers to mix and match lights and triggers, but there doesn’t seem to be a lot of guidance about how to get it all working smoothly.

The video below shows a Jinbei and Canon RT flash being mixed together, which could lead to some interesting combos, that might not support TTL or 1/8000 flash sync, but being able to work outside of their wireless system could be helpful. If you want everything to work smoothly and as advertised it’s probably best to just select some Jinbei lights to go with the trigger though.
