Laowa 9mm f/5.6 FF RL Announced

Laowa 9mm f/5.6 FF RL: Venus Optics / B&H Photo / Amazon

Anhui China, Jun 29, 2020 – Venus Optics, the manufacturer specialized in making unique camera lenses, unveiled the new Laowa 9mm f/5.6 FF RL lens, the world’s widest rectilinear lens for full frame cameras. Venus Optics have been designing ultra-wide angle lenses with outstanding optical performance and their 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 lens is currently the world’s widest zoom lens for full frame cameras.

Ultra-wide perspective
Featuring a remarkable 135° angle of view, the new Laowa 9mm f/5.6 is currently the widest non-fisheye lens ever developed for full frame mirrorless cameras. Landscape photographers can now experience an ultimate wide-angle photography with beautiful scenery captured in one shot. The ultra-wide angle of view is particularly helpful for interior shooting as it helps exaggerated the sense of space. The one-of-a-kind perspective also helps realized a lot of formerly impossible shots.

Super compact & lightweight
In response to the demand from mirrorless camera shooters of having a compact wide angle lens, Venus Optics have taken advantage of the flange distance of mirrorless cameras and compress the size of the 9mm f/5.6 lens to the smallest in its class, measuring approximately 2.4 inches (~6cm) long and weighing only 12 oz. (350g) with a lens diameter of 60mm. It is a welcome relief for landscape, architecture, interior or travel photographers that are traveling over long distances and looking for a high quality and portable ultra-wide lens to carry anywhere.

Extremely close focusing distance
In addition to the ultra-wide perspective, the new Laowa 9mm lens can focus extremely close, almost like a macro lens. The closest focusing distance is only 4.72” (12cm) measuring from subject to sensor. This is so much closer than the other ultra-wide angle lenses in the market and it provides a greater flexibility for photographers to compose shots at close and far distances and control depth of field much more easily.

Exceptional optical performance
Incorporating a 14 elements in 10 groups optical design, the 9mm is able to deliver an outstanding image sharpness from corners to corners. The 2pcs of big aspherical elements and 2pcs of extra-low dispersion elements help to eliminate chromatic aberrations successfully. Despite the fact that it is not one of the Zero-D lenses, the lens still exhibit a very low distortion at infinity distance compared to other ultra-wide angle lenses in the market.

Various mount options
The new 9mm lens is currently available in Leica M, Sony FE, Nikon Z and L mount. It’s the first Leica M lens Venus Optics have ever produced. It also supports rangefinder coupling on Leica cameras. 2 colors (Black & Silver) are available for Leica M mount. 100mm-wide filters compatible Venus Optics truly understand that filter is essential to produce an impressive landscape photo. Despite being an ultra-wide angle lens, Venus Optics have managed to work with partners to carefully design a filter holder that 100mm-wide filters can be used without serious vignetting. Unlike some other wide angle lenses where 120mm or even 150mm filter system are required, the entire landscape shooting setup for the Laowa 9mm lens will be extremely portable.

10 point sunstars
Laowa 9mm f/5.6 is designed with 5-bladed aperture where a clean and appealing 10-point sunstar rendering can be created.

DPR interviewed Kenji Tanaka from Sony about the affect COVID-19 is having on Sony and when the a7SIII is coming. Below is a summary of the interview:

  • COVID-19 has had an impact on production, and on procurement of supplies, but manufacturing in China and Thailand has helped.
  • COVID-19 should have a little long-term impact on production and logistics, but it might cause demand to decrease faster.
  • There is still strong demands for the Sony a7III and a7RIV
  • Demand is recovering in most regions already
  • Full-frame video is a big growing opportunity
  • The content creator market is growing rapidly so ZV1 has sold well even with COVID-19
  • Demand for products like the ZV1 is increasing
  • The Sony a7SII successor is coming later this summer the Sony a7sIII
  • The Sony a7SIII will be completely new
  • S from the S line originally stood for sensitivity but now it will stand for supreme thanks to the big pixels that many professionals and high-end users will like
  • People want 4k/60p and 10-bit 4:2:2 in the a7SIII
  • Sony is also working hard to deliver RAW video
  • Technology and innovation are Sony’s strengths
  • Sony continues developing products for consumers and not to compete with others they want their customers to say wow!
  • More cameras will have stacked sensors in the future
  • AF will get better with increased detection speed and accuracy for photo and video
  • AI is very, very important for the future
  • Sony is working on AI technology for the future and autofocus actuators for lenses
  • In ten to fifty years computational photography will likely do a lot of the things that traditional lenses do now
  • In the next 5 years, glass will still be superior to computational photography
  • Lenses can still evolve a lot
  • Unsure if cameras will act more like smartphones in the future or if smartphones will act more like cameras

Sensor Top Glass Testing on Sony APS-C Sensor: Dust, Dirt, Oils, and Even Knife Testing

Photographers can be a bit obsessive about scratches, but most will never notice the scratch unless reselling their equipment, but how durable is the sensor? Arthur tries to find out above and below is a summary.

  • Arthur R did this video due to viewers complaining about him leaving his camera sensor uncovered in previous videos
  • He never worried about dust on the sensor because he finds them easy to clean
  • For the experiment, he taped off an APS-C censor purchased online into 4 parts
  • Put dust on one part and rubbed it in with a qtip and then used a blower on it and cleaned it, but there were no scratches
  • Dirt on the second part and rubbed it in with a qtip and then cleaned it with a blower and swab like the previous and once again no scratches
  • The third part was oils from your fingers and he cleaned it with a dry swab without issue
  • The final quadrant of the sensor he used an X-Acto knife starting light and then going harder, which did leave some marks, but they were easier to spot on the tape
  • Everything including the adhesive came off without issue, but the knife did leave some marks
  • Start with cleaning mode on your camera, but using a blower followed by a swab should clean anything off your sensor that might be leftover.

Sony Support Measures for Industry Creators including Cinematographers and Photographers

Support Measures for Industry Creators including Cinematographers and Photographers
Financial Contributions from the Sony Global Relief Fund for COVID-19

Tokyo, Japan – Sony Corporation (“Sony”) today announced that it will devote funds to organizations related to creative communities and inspect Sony cameras free of charge, as support measures for industry creators including cinematographers, camera operators, camera assistants, and digital imaging technicians as well as photographers impacted by COVID-19

There are two specific initiatives:

  • Financial contribution to cinematographers and camera operators engaged in sports, filmmaking and scripted television and commercial production
  • Complimentary maintenance service of camera system for Sony Imaging PRO Support members

The global outbreak of COVID-19 has impacted content creators in nearly every facet of the industry, as sporting and music events, movies and television filming, as well as weddings and events have been put on hold. These have had a significant disruption on the commercial activities of professionals who support these industries with photo and video production. Sony will support these creators to continue their activities.

Funding for this program will be provided by the “Sony Global Relief Fund for COVID-19,” which was established by Sony in this April to help those who are affected by the pandemic.

“Sony has always worked closely with the creative community, by helping them pursue high-quality content creation”, said Hiroshi Kawano, Vice President, Sony Imaging Products & Solutions Inc. “This community’s success is vital to our own, which is why we have decided to implement these support measures in their time of need. We envision a future where content creators, especially younger generations, will be able to continue pursuing creative endeavors with superior production values, despite today’s challenging situation. We are proud to contribute funds and support to the content creation industry.”

1. Financial contribution to cinematographers and camera operators engaged in sports, filmmaking and scripted television and commercial production
Sony will start donating to the following organizations in order to support cinematographers, camera operators, camera assistants, and digital imaging technicians. This support fund will be used to support the activity of creators who belong to the organizations.
