More Sony a7SIII Information Leaked Along With German Press Release

Nokishita leaked more information about the Sony a7SIII from a leaked german article that I have translated below:

The main specifications of Sony α7S III are “12.1 million pixel Exmor R sensor”, “759 point image plane phase difference AF sensor”, “15stop+ dynamic range”, “standard ISO: 80-409.600”, “9.44 million dots 0.9x OLED viewfinder” It seems to be “3.0 type 1.44 million dot vari-angle LCD” “4K 120p movie”.

Almost five years after the Alpha 7S II, Sony is launching its successor: The Alpha 7S III has an improved 12-megapixel sensor, records 4K at 120p and is said to achieve exceptional results in low-light photography thanks to large pixels.

The heart of the new Alpha is a 12-megapixel full-frame sensor, which is opposite the Alpha 7S II
was improved. Sony is now opting for a construction with back exposure (BSI), with which more light can be captured and which enables better results with low light shots. The maximum sensitivity is still ISO 409.600 (expandable down to up to ISO 40). The sensor is supported by the new BIONZ-XR processor, which is said to have eight times as much computing power as the previous image processor. Sony is also breaking new ground in operation: For the first time in the Alpha 7 series, a fully moveable monitor (3.0 inches, 1.44 million points) was installed, which now also allows touch operation of the menus. The structure of the menus has also been completely revised; among other things, only the relevant entries are available in photo and video mode for better clarity. The OLED viewfinder achieves a record resolution of 9.44 million points and a magnification of 0.9x. In order to even glasses wearers have the entire picture in view, the size of the picture can also be reduced.

4K with 120p
One focus of the camera is video recording. Unlike Canon at the EOS R5 Sony does not use 8K for video, but continues to use 4K, which should achieve the best results so far with an alpha camera. The sensor’s 12 MP resolution enables a full pixel readout without pixel binning and without crop up to 4K / 60p. In this setting, the recording limit should be one hour without overheating – the EOS R5 only manages 30 minutes at 4K / 60p. The video recording of the Alpha 7S III in 4K / 120p mode is limited to this length – a slight crop also occurs here (1.1x).

The monitor can be swiveled, and the handle and controls have become larger, as with other cameras of the third Alpha generation.

With Full HD, the Alpha 7S III even records at up to 240p. For time-lapse recordings, lower frame rates up to 1p can also be selected in S&Q mode. It is recorded internally with a color subsampling of 4: 2: 2 and a color depth of 10 bits. New codecs are available: XAVC-SI records single images (All-I) with a data rate of up to 500 Mbits / s, XAVC-HS reduces the amount of data in image group compression to 200 Mbit / s thanks to H.265 compression. With HDMI 2.1, the camera can even output 4K / 60p as 16-bit raw files (ProRes Raw) to an Atomos recorder. Of course, there is also a logarithmic gamma profile available (S-Log 2/3), which should enable a dynamic range of over 15 f-stops; the sensitivity starts here at ISO 640 (extended: ISO 160). According to Sony, the rolling shutter effect has been significantly minimized. The Alpha 7S III is equipped with a 5-axis image stabilizer in the housing, which, measured according to the CIPA standard, achieves an effectiveness of 5.5 f-stops; In video mode, digital stabilization (active mode) is also used, which also uses a gyro sensor. The information from this gyro sensor can also be stored in the metadata of the videos so that it can be used in post-processing for digital stabilization. which also uses a gyro sensor. Fast autofocus and 10 frames / s
The hybrid autofocus covers 92% of the image sensor and uses 759 measuring fields with phase detection and 425 with contrast AF. In addition to human, the AF algorithms now recognize animal eyes – according to Sony, also at a greater distance than before. The AF sensitivity goes down to -6 EV series, the camera shoots at up to 10 frames / s. The mechanical lock is designed for 1/8000 s.

Sony is using two memory card drives in the Alpha 7S III for the first time, which both SD cards ( UHS -II) as well as the new CFexpress Type-A cards. They are smaller than that
Type B cards and faster than SD cards. For most video modes, SD cards of video classes V60 and V90 are sufficient; CFexpress is only required in S&Q mode with 4: 2: 2 color subsampling and 10 bit color depth. The series mode also benefits from the faster cards; 1000 uncompressed raws in a row should be possible here. Sony plans to launch two CFexpress Type A cards on the market in September, which have a write speed of 700 MB / s and a read speed of 800 MB / s: The 80 GB version is said to be 230 euros, the 160 GB version 440 Cost euros and supplies electricity for 600 photos or 95 minutes of video.

A Z battery is used for the power supply, which can be charged via
USB-C and power for
600 photos or 95 minutes of video. Continuous power supply via USB is also possible.

The Sony Alpha 7S III should be available in September for around 4200 euros.

Sony a7III vs Fujifilm X-T4 or Full Frame vs APS-C

Thehybridshooter released his video review comparing the Sony a7III to the Fujifilm X-T4. He comes from a Sony background in this comparison and makes a few mistakes due to not being overly familiar with Fujifilm cameras, but it is a worth wild comparison and I would tend to agree with him about Sony being the pragmatic choice. If you just want to get the shot the Sony a7III is very hard to match or beat, but Fujifilm does have a feel to it kind of like Leica. You can read a summary of the above video below:

  • Both are great cameras
  • Sony a7III full-frame camera with great sensor, flawless AF, IBIS, best battery life, very compact
  • Fujifilm X-T4 more geared towards enthusiasts with a vintage look/feel with APS-C sensor, IBIS, class-leading video, engaging analog controls
  • Size and weight are similar with the Sony being a little smaller
  • Both are made of magnesium
  • Both have plastic IO doors that I do not like
  • a7III has a more solid screen attachment because it doesn’t rotate
  • Both cameras feel premium
  • X-T4 is more vintage and one of the best-looking cameras on the market
  • a7III is minimalistic and I like it too
  • Both cameras use BSI sensors but they are different sizes
  • X-T4 has more pixels 26 vs 24
  • a7III you can get good results with average lenses
  • X-T4 needs better lenses to get good looking photos since the pixel density is more
  • Full frame shallow depth of field look is easier on a7III
  • Sony a7III has an incredible dynamic range
  • Fujifilm X-T4 has great dynamic range also, but not as much as a7III
  • No one should be disappointed with X-T4 dynamic range
  • X-T4 is about half a stop darker than a7III at same ISO
  • a7III is generally cleaner than X-T4
  • Fujifilm X-T4 ISO noise at 6,400 is about equal to a7III at 12,800
  • Sony a7III is acceptable at 12,800 and you can go higher depending on the scene
  • Fujifilm X-T4 shouldn’t go beyond 6,400
  • Similar color science with both
  • Both provide accurate color
  • Fujifilm has great simulations
  • Sony has picture profiles
  • Both cameras use hybrid AF
  • Sony a7III is basically perfect AF
  • Fujifilm X-T4 has good AF for stills, but not as good for video or if you are too far or close to the camera
  • New Fujifilm lenses with linear motors are smooth
  • Sony lenses work flawlessly even if using third party lenses
  • Both cameras do full sensor 4k with no crop
  • Fujifilm has 4k DCI 60p with no crop and Sony cant do 60p at all
  • X-T4 can do 4k 10-bit 4:2:0 400Mbps internally and 4:2:2 externally
  • a7III can only do 8-bit up to 100Mbps
  • Both cameras have good semi-flat profiles
  • X-T4 Eterna captures a lot of dynamic range with 10-bit files and this is currently his favorite way to record video
  • X-T4 Eterna is currently his favorite configuration for any camera
  • Sony’s flat profile is great too but is limited by 8-bit capture
  • X-T4 also has F-Log to work with
  • Sony’s automatic exposure changes smoothly for video
  • Fujifilm still has some issues with automatic exposure in video because it happens in steps
  • Fujifilm is the more advanced video camera thanks to the extra creative options
  • When it comes to handling Fujifilm has dedicated buttons for shutter/aperture/ISO
  • Sony has a more traditional setup with mode and exposure dials
  • Handling comes down to preference
  • Sony a7III has a larger grip that good to hold onto larger lenses
  • Fujifilm X-T4 doesn’t have the best grip, but it is pretty good
  • No complaints about Sony a7III button layout
  • Fujifilm has very good controls, but he doesn’t like the AF selector switch on the front, but likes the joystick on the back
  • Fujifilm is more fun to use than Sony a7III, but it is still fun to shoot with Sony
  • Fujifilm has the better user interface
  • Sony has an outdated user interface
  • Fujifilm X-T4 has a better quick menu than Sony a7III
  • Fujifilm X-T4 has well-organized menus
  • Both have dual card slots
  • Fujifilm has two UHS-II slots
  • Sony has one UHS-II slot
  • Both can be charged via USB-C while shooting
  • Mic and Headphone jack on both, but X-T4 require a dongle for a headphone jack
  • Both have IBIS
  • Fujifilm X-T4 has better IBIS
  • Sony’s IBIS isn’t as good, but it is impressive due to the size of the sensor and the camera
  • Fujifilm X-T4 has a better EVF and LCD on the back
  • Sony a7III has a slightly larger viewfinder, but it is lower resolution
  • Fujifilm X-T4 has a selfy screen and the a7III does not
  • He prefers a tilt-up screen to a selfy screen
  • Fujifilm X-T4 can shoot 15 fps with mechanical shutter and 30fps with electronic with autofocus, but there is a 1.25x crop
  • Sony can shoot 10fps and AF-C
  • Sony E-mount has the best lens selection at the moment including 3rd party lenses
  • Fujifilm has some optically very good lenses, but some are quite old and need updating for video etc…
  • Fujifilm f/2 primes are his favorite lenses at the moment along with the 16-80mm f/4
  • Fujinon MKX lenses are also excellent for advanced filmmakers
  • Both have great battery life, but Sony lasts the longest
  • Sony is a pragmatic choice
  • Fujifilm has a great sensor and it is great for filmmakers
  • Both cameras are a great value and there is no clear winner at this time
