Deep Dive Into Sony a7SIII Menu Changes

Sony’s menus have been a weak point for a long time, but it looks like they finally improved them some. Above Ted Forbes does a deep dive into the menus which look somewhat improved but still can’t be completely covered in an almost 20-minute video. I like that the new menu lets you see 3 levels deep into the menu tree easily and the touch controls seem intuitive, but the menu still feels cluttered to me, but have a look above.

New SMALLRIG Master Kit For Sony Alpha a7SIII Announced

Sony a7SIII: B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama

SHENZHEN, ChinaJuly 29, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — This July is apparently a big month for most filmmakers and photographers. Only three weeks after the launch of Canon R5/R6, Sony released the long-awaited camera Alpha 7S III. At the same time, camera accessory specialist SmallRig announced the Master Kit for Alpha 7S III users at an incredible speed.

One focus of the camera is video recording. With improved 12-megapixel sensor, Alpha 7S III is capable of shooting 4K video at up to 120fps and generating exceptional low-light photography. Besides that, the recording limit should be one hour without overheating, which gives it a possible edge over most cameras that are limited to 30 minutes when recording 4K.

To optimize the shooting experience, especially for featured long-time shooting of Alpha 7S III, SmallRig designed the Master Kit that includes a form-fitting full cage, a NATO rail, a NATO top handle and a cable clamp, which will be available in August 2020.

  • Cage for Sony Alpha 7S III: The camera can be firmly fixed onto the cage via a 1/4 screw on the bottom and an M2.5 screw on the side. Featuring multiple 1/4 and 3/8 thread holes, a built-in NATO rail on the side and a cold shoe, the cage allows various mount options under different shooting scenarios.
  • NATO Top Handle: Attaching to the top of the cage with a NATO rail, the handle can effectively smooth the low profile shooting while providing quick release.
  • HDMI Cable Clamp: Designed to hold the HDMI cable in place and prevent cable strain or accidental cable disconnects, the clamp secures to the cage with one captive 1/4 screw and two anti-twist pins and holds the HDMI cable with a thumbscrew.

Aiming to develop the whole ecosystem for filmmakers and content creators, SmallRig is constantly welcoming feedback of the camera utilization. Feel free to check out their website for more products and details: https://www.smallrig.com/smallrig-sony-alpha-7s-iii-mater-kit-3009.html

Sony a7SIII Post Launch Coverage

Sony finally launched the Sony a7SIII and many are very pleased with the camera they announced, but above Camera Conspiracy points out some of the silly decisions Sony made with the Sony a7SIII like putting a high-resolution EVF on a camera that will likely be used on a gimbal with the rear LCD, which is not a top of the line read LCD.

The big advantage of the Sony a7SIII is that it doesn’t seem to overheat ever, which is an innovation on its own, but it would have been nice if Sony really did create the ultimate all-around camera as they claimed they would. I am personally considering the Sony a7SIII for astrophotography, but the Sony a7SII might be a better investment for me.

For the videographers out there that are eating this camera up, Sony picked an odd group of people to give early access too. The internet is currently full of videos created by people analyzing the announcement without content to justify their statements. Above and below are statements by people that have had access to the camera in real life in addition to the announcement coverage here. I am cautiously optimistic that Sony knocked this camera out of the park for videographers outside of the nitpicking above, but things like the EVF make me look forward to future Sony cameras like a Sony a7RV.

Live Blog
So far it sounds like they are just reading the press release, which we leaked yesterday here. I will only put new notes below if there are any.

I am not impressed with the rolling shutter demo. I think the a9 does a better job.
