DPRTV: Sony a7SIII – Still The Low Light King

The Sony a7SIII has recieved almost universal praise since it was launched and now DPRTV has finished their review. You can read a summary of the review below:

  • Great dynamic range
  • Great high ISO
  • Sony a7SIII is good for photography but you shouldnt buy it just for photography
  • This camera is best for videographers that want to shoot photos on occassion
  • They have shot a few episodes on the a7SIII now
  • Cine 2 is good for low contrast shooting
  • Slog2 will give you more dynamic range
  • Slog3 never worked well before with 8-bit profiles but now Sony has a 10-bit profile with tons of dynamic range
  • a7SIII is noticibly less sharp than other cameras that super sample due to only capturing 12MP
  • Less sharpness is the tradeoff for more dynamic range and better low light performance
  • The 12MP sensor also reads out faster than higher MP sensors
  • Sony says it reads out 2x faster than the a7SII, but DPR thinks its more than 3x better making it the fastest readout around at the moment
  • PDAF works well with real time tracking AF, but you have to touch the screen to start the tracking
  • The only time they have had an issue with real time AF is when shooting log with fixed subjects
  • AF-S is the work around for tracking errors on still subjects
  • XAVC HS 4k files are very small but very demanding on your computer if they are too much for your computer use XAVC S 4k
  • Great slow motion modes and can use the new S&Q dial for 4k 120 or 4k 60, but if you need to capture audio in slowmotion it will be very hard on your computer
  • Best 1080p you’re going to see on any Sony camera
  • 1080 quality only drops with 240p, but it is still the best 240p around
  • Overheating is not a problem on this camera even for hours on end
  • It can over head if you shoot 4k 120p for half an hour then you can overhead
  • The EVF is exilent, but the quality is much better during playback than while filming
  • In the past if you were in mixed lighting the Sony would white balance wrong, but now Sony has a whitebalance sensor in the camera that does an ok job
  • Auto changing white balance changes slowly so be aware if you’re trusting the camera
  • The RAW video feed coming out of the full size HDMI is nice, but this camera wont let you dial in the ISO or white balance like other cameras, but it should come via future software updates
  • High ISO is still very good with very little color noise, but chris wouldnt go past 51k ISO for professional work
  • The menus are actually fun to use
  • Best camrea on the market for run and gun video work
  • No other camera can do what the Sony a7SIII can do

New Laowa 15mm f/4.5 Zero-D Shift Announced

Venus Optics announce the new Laowa 15mm f/4.5 Zero-D Shift Lens – World’s Widest Shift Lens for Full Frame Cameras (Preorder From Laowa)
Anhui China, Oct 30, 2020 – Venus Optics, the manufacturer specialized in making unique camera lenses, pioneered Laowa 15mm f/4.5 Zero-D Shift, the widest shift lens for full-frame cameras and medium format cameras. Giving credits to a ±11mm shift amount (±8mm on the medium format), this ultra-wide shift lens breaks through the industry level and bringing the wide-angle lens standard to the next level.

Image quality is guaranteed with high image sharpness and nearly no optical distortion (Zero- D). The 15mm f/4.5 Zero-D Shift enriches the diversity of Laowa’s extensive wide-angle lens collection by giving photographers more control on the perspective in their images.

World’s widest shift lens for Full Frame Cameras
15mm f/4.5 Shift is the widest shift lens for a full frame camera. The angle of view is 110°, and it covers a huge ⌀ 65mm image circle. The wider perspective offers great deal of flexibility for photographers to capture architecture and interior shots when space is limited.

±11mm Shift Amount
The maximum possible shift amount of the lens is ±11mm for full frame camera and ±8mm for medium format camera (e.g. Fujifilm GFX / Hasselblad X1D). The shift capability allows photographers to capture straight architecture with ease. 15mm f/4.5 Zero-D Shift straightens the lines that appear to converge in the distance. Crooked images can be corrected by changing the perspective of the lens. Perspective distortion is being eliminated to create the reality-like image.

The ±11mm shift amount also allows photographers to expand the angle of view by stitching multiple images. It gives an extraordinary image perspective and rooms for special compositions.

Large Image Circle
With a huge ⌀65mm image circle, the lens not only works with the full-frame format but also covers the medium format sensors. This makes it currently the World’s Widest lens covering Fujifilm GFX sensor with no vignetting.

+8MM SHIFT
No vignetting up to +/- 8mm shift

Zero Distortion
15mm f/4.5 Zero-D Shift is composed of 17 elements in 11 groups with 2pcs of aspherical elements. It suppresses the distortion to nearly Zero level from corner to corner. Perfect for architecture photography as any straight lines will be retained.

Impressive Image Quality
15mm f/4.5 Zero-D Shift is coupled with a new lens coating. A significant improvement on the chromatic aberration, flaring and ghosting control.

Extremely Close Focusing Distance
15mm f/4.5 Zero-D Shift is an ultra wide shift lens coupled with 20cm closest focusing distance. Macro-like photos can now be created easily. The Functionality of the lens is diverse. Wide angle macro image can be easily captured with this lens.

Stunning 10-point Sunstar
The 5-bladed aperture creates stunning 10-point sunstar rendering.

360° Rotation
The rotation function enables photographers to change the direction of the shift easily by pressing the silver unlock button. This gives photographers more flexibility in composing the image (in both landscape and portrait orientation). The lens barrel can be rotated through 360° and it clicks every 15°.

Shift Lens Support
A lens support is specially designed for 15mm f/4.5 Zero-D Shift. Perfect for panorama stitching as the optic axis remains unchanged..
