Optical Limits: Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 Resolution As Good As It Gets, But Not Perfect

Sony FE 35mm f/1.8: B&H Photo / Amazon / Adorama

Optical Limits released its Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 review and the lens sounds like a good value. You can check out the full review here if you want an in-depth look or read part of the conclusion below:

The Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 is a decent performer but it doesn’t excel in all categories. In terms of resolution, it is basically as good as it gets in the image center but the corners are “only” good to very good at mainstream settings and fairly weak corners at f/1.8. Lateral CAs are on the high side although this can be easily corrected. The slight pincushion distortion isn’t an obstacle for auto-correction either. The same can’t be said about vignetting which is very high in RAW files and still visible with activated auto-correction. The quality of the bokeh is pretty good, especially in the image background. Bokeh fringing (LoCA) can be visible at large-aperture settings though.

The build quality is pretty good without reaching pro levels. You can feel that the outer metal shell is fairly thin but Sony made a decent effort for a consumer-grade lens. The chassis is dust- and moisture-resistant and it doesn’t extend during focusing – as it should be. The broad focus ring is very smooth to operate. The AF is quick and noiseless. It would have been nice if Sony implemented an optical image stabilizer. However, most Sony cameras feature IBIS these days so it’s an understandable decision in order to keep the costs at bay.

New Compact LightPix Lab FlashQ x20 For Sony Cameras

You can get the new compact LightPix Lab FlashQ x20 from B&H Photo and Amazon

The compact, lightweight FlashQ x20 with Transmitter for Sony from LightPix Labs is a cost-efficient, Sony ADI / P-TTL-compatible lighting solution with advanced triggering and control features. The lightweight, compact flash easily fits into tight places where larger units can’t go. With a guide number of 65, the FlashQ x20 has TTL power selection and runs on two alkaline or rechargeable NiMH batteries, and it will recycle quickly depending on the batteries in use.

One of the flash’s clever features is the removeable Sony TTL transmitter that comes with the unit. By detaching the transmitter and mounting the flash head remotely on a light stand, you can adjust power and trigger it from the on-camera transmitter at a distance. In fact, the transmitter can control several x20s simultaneously. Features include 1st and 2nd curtain sync and flash exposure compensation. Perks include a built-in filter holder and tilting capability. Finally, a pleasant surprise is FlashQ x20’s LED light, which can be used as a modeling light, or with its high CRI of 95, used as a video light.

Sony Camera Compatibility
a7, a7 II, a7 III, a7R II, a7R III, a7R IV, a7s, a7s II, a7s III, a7C, a6000, a6300, a6400, a6500, RX1, RX1R, RX1 R II, RX10, RX10 II, RX10 III, RX10 IV

Benefits

  • Guide number 65.62′ / 20m (ISO 100 @ 32mm)
  • Compatible with Sony ADI / P-TTL
  • Front and rear curtain sync
  • Wireless TTL, off-camera flash any time with detachable transmitter
  • Remote control power ratio, video light level
  • Flash exposure compensation
  • Tiltable flash head
  • Built-in color gel holder
  • LED video light with adjustable color and brightness
  • FlashQ Transmitter with built-in rechargeable Li-Ion battery
  • USB charger for transmitter and x20 flash (using optional NiMH batteries)

Remote Triggering Power Level Adjustment
The x20 functions like a typical on-camera flash while attached to the included shoe-mount FlashQ transmitter. Detaching the flash puts it into wireless, mode allowing it to be used off-camera. Wireless triggering and power level adjustment can then be accomplished via the camera-mounted transmitter

Power
The x20 runs on two AA alkaline batteries or two rechargeable Ni-MH batteries. The transmitter can be conveniently charged via USB

LED Video / Modeling Light
The x20 features an LED light for use as a modeling light or with its CRI of 95, used as a video light

First Viltrox E 13mm f/1.4 Images Posted to Weibo

There is a photography convention in China happening today and Viltrox posted some images of it that include our first look of the Viltrox 13mm f/1.4. You can see the original post here. The 13mm should be a very interesting lens for Astrophotography and it might convince me to pick up a full set of Viltrox autofocus lenses.
