DPRTV posted an interesting video comparing the Sony FX3 and Sony a7SIII. You can watch the full video above or read the key points below:
- The FX3 is part of the cinema family but the menus come from Sony consumer cameras
- The FX3 has no EVF so you have to compose with its 1.44m dot fully articulating screen
- The Sony a7SIII has a very nice new EVF that you can use
- FX3 rear screen doesn’t get bright enough for direct sunlight
- FX3 has a dim tally light on the front and a bright one on the back
- FX3 ergonomics have been designed for waist-level shooting
- Lots of record buttons on the FX3, but Jordon prefers to use the shutter button
- There is a zoom toggle where the power switch used to be
- The power switch is on the opposite side of the camera now and Jordon hates it
- The body is covered in 5 quarter 20 mounts so you can stick it in a cage or just attach stuff to the camera all over
- There is an included XLR adapter with a nice top handle
- The FX3 audio adapter has 4 audio channels
- Channels 3 & 4 are tied together as the two stereo channels from the 3.5mm input
- The consumer menus are better laid out than the cinema series menus, but the menus lack some useful features like shutter angle and wave forums
- It would be nice if you could set up your settings with the touch screen
- FX3 footage looks exactly the same as a7SIII footage
- S-Cinetone is great, but the a7SIII has that now via a firmware update
- Video quality is pretty close to cameras that have over-sampled images
- Sony applies a lot of noise reduction to video, but if you use an external recorder you can pick how much to apply
- Prores RAW doesn’t currently work in DaVinci resolve
- The FX6 doesn’t offer a big step up in image quality but it does allow you to control noise reduction and the ability to record cinema 4k
- The big advantage of the FX3 over the a7SIII is the built-in fan which will help you to shoot longer in hotter environments
- The a7SIII is best for run and gun portability
- Jordan wishes they let people know the FX3 was coming when the a7SIII was announced
- Jordan would pick the a7SIII over the FX3 because he likes to use the viewfinder
