The Godox AD100 Pro is an interesting lighting kit that is ultra-portable and it is so small it can fit in a lens pouch. Robert Hall put together a pretty in-depth review of the unit, which you can watch above along with a 7 tips video that you can view below. If videos aren’t for you or you want to get the information a bit faster below is a summary:
- Accepts magnetic modifiers
- Not a replacement for the AD 200
- Roundhead design
- 100 W/s but it’s not half the power of the AD 200
- 1/2 stop more powerful than the Godox V1
- 1.5 sec recycle time at 1/1
- Consistently outperforms its 100W rating even with modifiers
- Consistent light output throughout its power range and only falls short at minimum power loses 1.7 stops of power during HSS at 1/1
- .5 magenta tint but consistent light color output throughout the output range
- 6252k to 5957k output across the output range which is better than the AD200
- T.1 between power 1/1 FDA 1/447 and power 1/256 FDA 1/27800
- Comes in a case with a stand attachment, charger, and battery
- The battery can power 360 full-power flashes
- Same specs as the Godox V1 battery and the V1 battery works in the AD 100 with the same recycle time
- Recycle time is more like 1.23s
- Built-in thermal protection so the light will slow down around 25-30 flashes
- After about 30 flashes it takes about 2 seconds to recycle
- Minimal buttons and the display is dark with light blue text
- It should have a brighter display for outdoors
- You can secure the radio flash so others cant trigger your flash
- The modeling lamp is under 2 watts so not very useful
- Ridiculously tiny and it is the size of a soda
- You can store these lights in lens pouches
- Stand attachment is like the AD 300 Pro
- Compatible with the S2 bracket, but the S2 bracket is larger than the flash
- Magnetic modifiers are the other option for modifiers
- AD 100 has a 28-100mm zoom range which gives you an added element of control over the AD 200, but you can get a similar function on the AD 200 with modifiers
- You can use a V1 as a commander with AD 100
- The AD 100 will be a great fit for mobile headshot photographers, wedding photographers indoors, hair light outdoors, but not powerful enough to be a key light outdoors
