Interview: Sony Declares “Professional Market Strategy” For Mirrorless Cameras
Sony has been granting a lot of interviews lately to fully explain their roadmap going forward and the latest with DC.Watch gives us a few new details, which I have highlighted below.
- Digital camera, interchangeable lens, digital video camera, broadcasting station, cinema solution, broadcasting equipment, network camera, medical business unit, Felica business etc… began operating separately from Sony Corporation in April this year.
- Mirrorless cameras are showing growth in 2017 with the still camera business projecting to contract all over the world.
- Sony’s domestic share of full-size body reached approximately 29% (the first half of 2017).
- The Sony a7RIII has exceeded preorder expectations and is expected to become the center of business in the second half of 2017.
- Sony is focused on growing their professional market, which is hard to grow, but it will trickle down to consumers, which are still important to Sony.
- Sony releases about 5 lenses a year.
- Sony is following professionals around to design their cameras and pro service to be better tailored than competitors. This will take time, but they have made progress since 2014, when they started.
- Professional and consumer cameras aren’t all that different anymore
- The Sony’s CineAltaVENICE sensor is based on a still camera sensor.
- Eleven years have passed since Sony’s α came out.
- The Toyko Olympics could be an opportunity to show off.
- Mr. Ishizuka’s current favorite machine is RX10 IV
