DPRTV: Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III RXD FE Review
DPRTV released their lens review for the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III RXD FE. Below is a summary of the video:
- Very compact professional telephoto lens
- 67mm front filter threat matches the other Tamron zooms
- Almost half the weight of the G master
- Big savings in size also
- G master had OIS, but the Tamron does not
- Not all Sony lenses have IBIS so this could be a negative
- Lens-based stabilization for telephoto is more affective
- The Tamron’s performance depends largely on the body you use
- Weather sealed and pretty good rugged construction
- Zoom ring in the front and MF ring behind it, which can be hard to get used to
- Very sharp lens that can handle a7RIII a7RIV no problem
- Sharp wide open and the corners hold up well
- If you’re up close make sure you focus on the corner specificity
- f/5.6 is great sharp across the lens
- f/2.8 constant is good for indoor sports and portraiture
- It looks like it could take a teleconverter in the future for this lens that would give you more versatility
- Don’t really like the bokeh of this lens and specular high lights are a little busy for his liking
- Mechanical vignetting
- LOCA well controlled
- Pretty good macro capabilities
- 70mm has 1:2 reproduction
- Jordon isn’t thrilled about the video
- MF isn’t linear so you can do repeatable focus pulls
- There is a little bit of lens breathing
- Lack of stabilization will affect video
- AF is very fast and very quiet that can easily deal with sports and wildlife
- Average sun star results at best
- Very impressed with flare/glade and minimal ghosting
- Tamron has been doing a great job with their new mirrorless lenses
