DPRTV: Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 – Knocks Out The G Master?
The original Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD was a huge hit among E-mount shooters besting Sony lenses over twice its price. Now the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD G2 is available and DPRTV has posted its review. Below is a summary:
- The original lens came out 3 years ago
- Original was super compact and light
- New lens is even lighter
- Weather sealing
- Still plastic construction with a slightly better manual focus ring
- 76mm filter threat across their lineup
- Motor upgraded to the voice coil linear motor system instead of the old stepping motor which was pretty good
- New VXD motor is very fast and silent
- The new lens still has some flare like the original
- Original had soap bubble boke and the new G2 is smoother
- Focus breathing is better than average
- Handles LoCA well and there is almost nothing
- Sunstars are the same as the first lens pretty average
- The corners have improved wide open on the G2
- Overall image quality is better on the new lens
- The control of flare is the only thing that hasn’t really improved
- Sony has a lot of great standard zoom options and the Tamron won’t disappoint
- The G master isn’t really in the running anymore because of the great third party options so save your money
DPRTV didn’t completely say it but the updated Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD G2 pretty much knocks out the G Master considering how close the original Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD was to making the lens irrelevant. Sony really should update the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM because it is twice as much as the third party options on the market and doesn’t match third-party performance.
