DPRTV made an interesting comparison between the Sony a7RIV at 61MP and the Sony a7SIII at 12MP to compare noise performance in low light and the results might surprise you if you do not print your photos. In shorts, noise performance tends to become equal or even worse with the lower megapixel camera when printing, but if you clean up performance the results can be quite comparable until you increase the print size.

Personally, I have always picked megapixels over low light performance just because I can usually work around any shortcomings and I want to be ready for 8k and 16k.
