Sony a7III vs Nikon Z6II vs Panasonic S5 vs Canon R6

Sony has done a lot to create and grow the mirrorless full frame market, but now there are several challengers and DPRTV wants to see how they stack up. Below is a summary of the above video.

Handling

  1. Canon R6 – DPRTV’s favorite because Canon paid them… joking… maybe
  2. Nikon ZII – love the feel and layout
  3. Panasonic S5 – has kind of a plastic feel that they do not like, but the S1 feels better
  4. Sony a7III – convoluted menus and the camera is showing its age

Displays

  1. Canon R6 – Very modern
  2. Nikon ZII – great optics in the EVF, but the refresh rate could be better
  3. Panasonic S5 – no excuse there are much better EVF out there right now
  4. Sony a7III – the camera is showing its age as EVF and rear screens improve

Video

  1. Panasonic S5 – very capable with internal 10-bit, vlog, anamorphic, etc… just not great AF-C
  2. Canon R6 – overheating issues
  3. Nikon ZII and Sony a7 tie because they do not have modern resolutions/refresh rates or codecs

Image Quality

  1. Panasonic S5 – great color and no PDAF banding since it is CDAF, push high-resolution mode with IBIS
  2. Nikon ZII – addressed banding issues, etc…
  3. Canon R6 – Most improved sensor but has a slow scan speed
  4. Sony a7III – they get a bad wrap for JPEG color but looks great when post-processing, but no lossless RAW

AF Performance

  1. Canon R6 – First camera in class to get close to Sony AF but when considering the overall it is the best
  2. Sony a7III – still great AF on a two-year-old camera
  3. Nikon ZII – getting better and not as much eyelash AF
  4. Panasonic S5 – CDAF cant match PDAF

Overall

  1. Canon
  2. Panasonic S5
  3. Nikon ZII
  4. Sony a7III

I have no doubt Sony will top this list when the Sony a7IV is released and it’s shocking that a 2-year-old camera can still compete with new cameras from the competition.
