Kai: Sony a6600 and a6100 First Look/Hands-On – It’s All About Real-Time Autofocus

Kai covered the launch of the a6600 and a6100 in his typical style, but he seems to get stuck on just how good real-time autofocus performs. Hopefully, Sony will start to discontinue some of the confusingly named cameras they have out there with the a6xxx series, because as of right now the a6100 and a6600 are the only two seriously worth considering and maybe the a6400.

Good

• IBIS
• Forward-facing screen
• Headphone socket
• Z-battery 720-810 shots
• Bigger grip
• Solid magnesium alloy body
• a9 menus
• a9 Real-Time Autofocus is super sticky
• Modern Sony color science
• Great video
• ISO increased to 32,000

Bad

• Digital Shotgun mic doesn’t work digitally
• Bad rolling shutter

Sony a6100

Good

• Great Value
• Real-Time AF like Sony’s other new cameras
• It’s basically an a6400
• It does everything really well
• a6000 has been around forever and the a6100 is finally the upgrade
• Same sensor and AF as a6600
• AF performs well

Bad

• EVF doesn’t have many pixels
• Old Battery
• Plastic body without sealing, but that’s to be expected
• No Slog or picture profiles
• No IBIS
