DPRTV: Sony a7RIII vs Panasonic S1R vs Nikon Z7
DPRTV compared the high-resolution Sony a7RIII vs Panasonic S1R vs Nikon Z7. Below are some excerpts from the comparison:
Handling
- Nikon Z7
- Panasonic S1R
- Sony a7RIII
Displays
- Panasonic S1R highest resolution EVF
- Nikon Z7 great OLED on the back
- Sony a7RIII lowest magnification
Batteries and Media
- Sony a7RIII great battery but should have two UHS-II slots
- Panasonic S1R huge battery but only ok photo performance
- Nikon Z7 single card slot and worst battery life of the batch
Lenses
- Sony a7RIII G Master line and a lot of selection with great adapters
- Nikon Z7 Good adapter and lots of lenses coming but it’s a new mount
- Panasonic S1R hasn’t been around long enough and Leica L-Mount lenses are crazy expensive
Autofocus
- Sony a7RIII best of the bunch for AF by far
- Panasonic S1R slightly better hit rate than the Nikon but CDAF only
- Nikon Z7 bad AF implementation
Video
- Panasonic S1R best IBIS and a great XLR adapter with 4k 60p
- Nikon Z7 best video AF but bad preamp for audio 10-bit external
- Sony a7RIII stuck in 8-bit
Image Quality
- Sony a7RIII great dynamic range across the ISO range, but the multishot mode isn’t great
- Panasonic S1R best high-resolution mode with the lowest dynamic range at base ISO and most noise at high ISO
- Nikon Z7 good image quality, but there is banding if you push the shadows
Panasonic S1R doesn’t have great AF, but great IBIS with the nicest body/displays/interface/video but the biggest issue with this camera is the price.
Sony a7RIII good price point with the best image quality, AF, and battery life, but the camera is starting to show its age. This is probably the best all-around performer.
Nikon Z7 hard to recommend coming into the system because it is really meant to attract photographers with lots of F glass.
