Panasonic S1R vs Sony a7RIII and Panasonic S1 vs Sony a7III: Specs and Size Compared
Sony has been ahead of the curve for a long time and now everyone is trying to come after their market share. I don’t know if the Panasonic S1R/S1 will be tempting enough, but Apotelyt had put together their comparisons. Advantages of the Sony Alpha A7R III:
- Better video autofocus: Features on-sensor phase-detection for more confident movie autofocus.
- More compact: Is smaller (127x96mm vs 149x110mm) and thus needs less room in the bag.
- Less heavy: Is lighter (by 248g or 28 percent) and hence easier to carry around.
- Easier travel charging: Can be conveniently charged via its USB port.
- Faster data transfer: Supports a more advanced USB protocol (3.1 vs 3.0).
- Easier device pairing: Supports NFC for fast wireless image transfer over short distances.
- Better studio light control: Has a PC Sync socket to connect to professional strobe lights.
- More heavily discounted: Has been on the market for longer (launched in October 2017).
Arguments in favor of the Panasonic Lumix DC-S1R:
- More detail: Has more megapixels (47.3 vs 42.2MP), which boosts linear resolution by 6%.
- Better video: Provides higher movie framerates (4K/60p versus 4K/30p).
- More detailed viewfinder: Has higher resolution electronic viewfinder (5760k vs 3686k dots).
- Easier setting verification: Features a control panel on top to check shooting parameters.
- More detailed LCD: Has a higher resolution rear screen (2100k vs 1440k dots).
- More flexible LCD: Has full-flex screen for odd-angle shots in portrait or landscape orientation.
- More solid recording: Has a full-sized HDMI port for a sturdy connection to an external recorder.
- More affordable: Was introduced into a lower priced category (38 percent cheaper at launch).
- More modern: Was introduced somewhat (1 year and 3 months) more recently.
Comparing the Sony a7III and Panasonic S1 is also very interesting. I can’t wait to see Sony’s 5760k EVF on a future Sony camera like the Sony a7SIII or upcoming professional APS-C camera.
