DXO: Sony a7RIII vs Nikon D850 vs Sony a7RII

Now Sony has officially reached DXO’s 100 overall score threshold alongside the Nikon D850. With slightly different measurements than Photon to Photo’s results. DXO’s commentary is right in line with the marketing materials even though Photon to Photo shows no advantage from the Nikon D850 ISO 32 option.

“However, comparing the A7R III sensor to the Nikon D850’s reveals the advantage that the Nikon camera’s lower minimum sensitivity (ISO) value brings. Photographers who predominantly shoot in bright light or capture motionless subjects with the camera on a tripod will record the most information, be it color, tone, or detail with the Nikon D850 set to ISO 32. However, if they require values above that, the Sony A7R III sensor produces marginally better images.”

No matter, DXO results are news worth even though their prestige has been diminished in recent years due to a variety of oddities over the years. Maybe DXO will readjust their test now that more cameras are reaching 100 or even surpassing 100. What really matters is that many of us will get to go hands-on with our own a7RIII’s in a few days and for the first time in a long time I am excited to put a Sony camera through its paces. I am particularly interested to see how my Sony Planar T* FE 50mm f/1.4 ZA performs.
