DPRTV: Tamron 150-500mm f/5-6.7 Di III VC VXD

Tamron has been making some great glass for E-mount cameras and the Tamron 150-500mm f/5-6.7 Di III VC VXD seems to live up to the expectations of fans so it should not be missed. Below is a summary of DPRTV’s findings:

  • Very easy to carry even though it is a bit bulky but not heavy
  • 1.88kg or 4.15lbs
  • Mirrorless telephoto design
  • No teleconverters
  • Pretty compact
  • Tight and solid feel
  • Nice zoom ring that locks if you push it forward
  • Nice balanced tripod arm that is cut for arca swiss
  • No mechanical click for rotating the camera around the collar
  • The manual focus ring is a little sloppy
  • Vibration control switch and AF/MF plus focus limiter
  • Linear motor focuses fast and silently
  • Max frame rate 15fps due to Sony locking it out of beyond
  • Minimal breathing, but very well controlled at 500mm
  • No major optical defects
  • Not bad Loca
  • Great for macro at 150mm
  • 1:3 life-size reproduction on a full-frame camera
  • Pretty significant field curvature so if you focus on the center make sure the sides are sharp
  • Very sharp even wide open at 150mm
  • Very sharp wide open at 500mm too
  • Not much of an improvement even stopping down to f/8
  • Soft corners are not an issue on an APS-C body
  • Sits between the Sony 200-600mm and Sigma 100-400mm from its price point to its quality
  • Best for sunny days
