Photons to Photos Estimates Sony a9 Dynamic Range Compared to Nikon D5 and Canon 1DX Mark II, Plus Daily a9 Coverage

Photons to Photos has quickly become the go-to place for technical camera information first since first being featured on FujiAddict. Their estimated dynamic range of the Sony a9 puts it in a neck and neck battle with the Nikon D5 and Canon 1DX Mark II. I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if their estimates are little on the safe side, but we will see when the camera ships next month.

In some ways, the Sony a9 is excessively fast. When I shoot my Fujifilm X-T2 at full speed I always regret the number of frames I have to sort through and it’s limited to 14fps. According to early impressions filling your camera buffer leads to a 2-minute wait for it to clear, which seems a bit excessive, I wonder if this would improve if both card slots were UHS-2.

There are also now two new Sony a9 Bundle available. One is for action shooters, while the other simply includes accessories.

All flash — no bang for anything sports.

Ya gotta have the optics to play in that backyard.

You could have the greatest sports capture ever made, but without that wide aperture separation between subject & crowd, all you have is a jumbled mess too busy to see the moment. It’s just 20 FPS of nothing.

Sony is a yappy little dog trying to cage fight with pit bulls. It’s going to get hammered by the pros they are trying to attract due to being a incomplete camera system that lacks the weather sealing/lens and battery life to play in the big leagues and for good reason.

I agree with both of you but the spec sheet alone is enough to sell to wealthy enthusiasts, the benefit of this is the both Nikon and Canon will respond to this with more substantial upgrades in their pro lines to quiet Sony

  • The ILCE-9 results are marked as an estimate because the available files don’t comply with my usual test protocol.
When I have complete data for every ISO setting it’s likely the ILCE-9 will be very much like the ILCE-7RM2.
