Sony FE 70-300mm F/4.5 5.6 G OSS DXO Mark Results

DXO published their results for the Sony FE 70-300mm F/4.5 5.6 G OSS and it did well against it’s rivals, but it’s not as sharp as the Sony FE 70-200mm F4 G OSS.

“In terms of optical quality alone, the FE 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 G OSS is on par with the best of its rivals. It has good sharpness at the longer focal lengths, though closing down a stop at 300mm to f/8, when light levels permit, improves levels significantly.”

I’m surprised the Sony beat the Canon in terms of sharpness.

I have been contemplating moving from Canon to the Sony, specifically the A99ii but when you look at DXO’s lens scores its a little worrying, there are only 2 lenses in the entire range that score higher than 27!

    • A mount has been neglected by all, but includes Minolta lenses etc… I would guess the scores are low because the bodies they used were outdated. That being said many believed A mount to be dead so I’m not sure I would switch to it from Canon. If you’re looking to switch I would look at growing systems like E-mount and Fujifilm. What do you shoot?

A little of everything really, landscape, wildlife, people. Here some of my shots:

I am trying to get into wedding, pet, family, etc just so i can get out of my boring office job.

I would have agreed with you on the A Mount before the A99ii but this camera looks so nice and that Sony seem serious about the A Mount, they have almost confirmed more cameras will come, i’m guessing A77iii will be next, so maybe the A99ii will breath new life into this mount?

I am not a massive fan of the size of the E-Mount cameras. I don’t see why a camera needs to be that small. There are too many draw backs getting it so small. If i did do wedding photography i would need a twin memory card slot for back up, i believe only the A99ii offers this?
