It seems that Zeiss has adjusted this lens exit pupil (thus aperture) to be able to stay with a 52mm filter common to all the other Loxia lenses (21mm f2.8, 35mm f/2.0, and 50mm f/2.0).

The weight of this 85mm f/2.4 is however significantly higher at 584g compared to the other Loxia (21mm at 394g, 35mm at 340g, and 50mm at 320g).

Interestingly, the autofocusing Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8 sells for $200 less, and weighs also weighs 109g less at 475g than this manual focus Zeiss Loxia 85mm f/2.4.

    • Which would indicate a much more robust construction.

Heavier, no AF, no optical stabilization … Loxia will indeed have a more robust construction over the Batis.
But the Batis is not a pushover, and it is unlikely that most Loxia owners would treat its gears so roughly as to need that more robust construction.

        • They are paying for a more robust construction and getting it. The Batis is a fine lens that is well constructed and optically superb, the Loxia perhaps more so.

            It’s good to have choices.

The initial Loxia 85mm f/2.4 sample images looks good but I would like to see a side-by-side comparison with the Batis f/1.8 at the same aperture setting. The Batis would be one-stop stepped down at f/2.4 and it is very good at that setting. I will be impressed if the Loxia will better that significantly wide-open.
