New Sony 50mm Macro f/2.8 Lens Announced

Sony announced another 50mm today this time with 1:1 macro capabilities and it will be available for preorder on September 11th at B&H Photo.

A normal-length prime with close-focusing capabilities, the FE 50mm f/2.8 Macro Lens from Sony offers an impressive 1:1 maximum magnification, along with a 6.3″ minimum focusing distance, for making life-size imagery of close-up subjects. Useful controls, such as a top-printed distance and magnification scale, focus range limiter, and focus hold button, all benefit more precise focusing adjustments for refined results. Complementing the handling capabilities, the optical design also incorporates both an aspherical and an extra-low dispersion element, which work to suppress chromatic and spherical aberrations for increased clarity throughout the focus range. Additionally, the lens sports a dust- and moisture-resistant design to benefit working in inclement weather conditions.

  • Standard prime macro lens is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, and can also be used on APS-C models where it provides a 75mm equivalent focal length.
  • True macro design affords a life-size, 1:1 magnification ratio along with a 6.3″ minimum focusing distance for working with close-up subjects. A focusing distance and magnification scale is also printed on the top of the lens to aid in more technical applications
  • One aspherical element and one extra-low dispersion glass element are incorporated into the optical design to reduce both spherical and chromatic aberrations for increased clarity and sharpness.
  • A focus range limiter switch allows you constrain the usable focus range between 6.3-11.8″, 11.8″-infinity, or full, and a focus hold button is also featured to manually stop the autofocus at a specified point.
  • Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
  • Dust- and moisture-resistant construction benefits this lens’ use in inclement conditions.

Sony Press Release:

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 30, 2016 – Sony Electronics, a worldwide leader in digital imaging and the world’s largest image sensor manufacturer, has today introduced a new full-frame lens for their E-mount camera system, the FE 50mm F2.8 Macro lens (model SEL50M28).

Ideal for everyday photography, this 50mm macro lens features an F2.8 maximum aperture that offers outstanding image quality and bokeh, while its 1:1 macro capability allows the photographer to get sharp close-up shots of their subject. Additionally, its comprehensive range of controls including focus-mode switch, focus-range limiter and focus-hold button ensure an effortless shooting experience for a wide range of users.

The lens offers a 6.3 inch minimum focusing distance and a wider field of view for capturing more background, compared to longer focal-length macro lenses. Weighing in at a mere 8.4 oz., it’s extremely lightweight and portable, making it easy to carry around.

The new FE 50mm F2.8 Macro lens features an ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass to effectively compensate for axial chromatic aberration at close focus, allowing it to create consistently sharp and high quality images. The optical and mechanical construction of the lens has less glare and ghosting, even without a lens hood. The lens is also dust and moisture resistant.

Pricing and Availability

The new FE 50mm F2.8 Macro lens will be available in September for about $500 US and $650 CA, respectively. It will be sold at a variety of Sony authorized dealers throughout North America.

Why couldn’t it have been 60mm instead!!! The APS-C version gets approximately 75mm! (Zeiss Touit 50mm f/2.8M)

    • 50mm Macro full frame didn’t make a lot of sense to me either. Sony has too many 50mm lenses on the market at the moment. I’m glad they are rounding out their system, but I wish they would address interface issues at this point.

Ah yeah that… It’s not the prettiest I agree. Not intuitive at all. I kind of got used to it, but I still forget where some things are at times.

        • It’s more about speed for me. The less I have to use menus the better.

          • Neopulse

            I agree, definitely.

Barrel extends in and out while focusing, so I’ll take the “dust-and-moisture” resistant bit with a grain of salt. 😛

Having said that, agree with previous poster on 60mm. Would love to have that.
